What is Windows
❖ Microsoft Windows is a graphical operating system developed and

published by Microsoft. It provides a way to store files, run software, play
games, watch videos, and connect to the Internet.
❖ Microsoft Windows was first introduced with version 1.0 on November 10,
1983. Over a dozen versions of Windows were released after that, including
the current version, Windows 10.
❖ An operating system is a software that enables the communication between
computer hardware and software.
Why is Microsoft Windows called
Windows?
❖ Before the release of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft users were used to do

single task command line operating system MS-DOS.
❖ Because Microsoft names most of its products with one word, it needed a
word that best described its new GUI operating system.
❖ Microsoft chose "Windows" because of the multiple windows that allow
different tasks and programs to run at the same time.
Why use Windows
❖ It is very easy even for the I.T Engineers

❖ It is a paradise for gamers
❖ Software Availability is highest in Windows.
Disadvantages of Windows
❖ Virus are made for Windows

❖ We can moderately customise windows like changing desktops wallpapers,
image of icons, etc.
❖ It slow downs, Lags a lot
What is Linux?
❖ Linux is an operating system like other operating systems such as Microsoft

Windows,Apple Mac OS, iOS, Google android, etc.
❖ Linux has been around since the mid-1990s.
❖ It is a free and open-source operating system
What is Open Source
❖ The code used to create Linux is free and available to the public to view, edit,
for users.
❖ Any programmers with appropriate skills can makes changes in Linux
❖ The code has to be tested by other programmers and it should contribute
something to Linux.
What is Unix?
❖ Unix -- trademarked as UNIX -- is a multiuser, multitasking operating

system (OS) designed for flexibility and adaptability.
❖ Unix was written in assembler language, but the fourth edition was
rewritten in C.
❖ This was revolutionary at the time because OS were thought to be too
complex and sophisticated to be written in C, a high-level language. This
increased Unix's portability across multiple computing platforms.
Evolution of Linux
❖ Linux was developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991, which sprouted as an idea

to improve the UNIX OS.
❖ He suggested improvements but was rejected by UNIX designers.
❖ Therefore, he thought of launching an OS, designed in a way that could be
modified by its users.
What is Distribution
❖ Linux has a number of different versions to suit any type of user.

❖ From new users to hard-core users, you’ll find a “flavor” of Linux to match
your needs.
❖ Nearly every distribution of Linux can be downloaded for free

❖ If you struggle with the previous, Linux might be the perfect platform for
you. Linux has evolved into one of the most reliable computer ecosystems on
the planet.
❖ That’s right, zero cost of entry… as in free. You can install Linux on as many
computers as you like without paying a cent for software.
Linux is Everywhere
❖ It is extremely flexible due to its open source nature, so anyone can go

through Linux’s code and modify it however they need.
❖ It is very portable, meaning that it can be easily used on virtually all CPU
architectures.
❖ It is very fast, which means that it can be used on cheaper hardware.
❖ It is free, which is a good incentive for almost anyone.
