Concept
• Life table = summary of age-specific
mortality rates of a population
Meaning of Life Table
• Life table is a mathematical sample which
gives of death in a country and is the basis for
measuring the average life expectancy in a
society.
• It tells about the probability of a person dying
at a certain age , or living up to a definite age.
Definitions of Life Table
• “The life table is a mathematical model that
portrays mortality condition at a particular time
among a population and provides a basis for
measuring longevity. It is based on age specific
mortality rates observed for a population for a
particular year.”--------Bougue
• “ The life table is a life history of a hypothetical
group or cohort of people, as it is diminished
gradually by death. The records begins at the
birth of each member and continues until all
died.” -----Barcelay
Assumptions of Life Table
• A hypothetical cohort of life table usually comprises of
1000 or 10,000 or 1,00,000 births.
• The deaths are equally distributed throughout the year.
• The cohort of people diminish gradually by death only.
• The cohort is closed to the in-migration and out-migration.
• The death rate is related to a pre-determined age specific
death rate.
• The cohort of persons die at a fixed age which does not
change.
• There is no change in death rates overtime.
• The cohort of life tables are generally constructed
separately for males and females.
Types of Life Table
• Cohort life table - follow a cohort (one similarly aged
group) through time
– Best method, but difficult for long-lived animals
• Static life table – observe age structure of a
population at a specific time or collect corpses and
determine age
– Inferring mortality rates from age structure requires
assumptions
• Static population (zero growth)
• No immigration / emigration
• Age-specific mortality is constant over time
Construction of a complete Life Table
Life table

• observed data: Dx and Px

• mortality rates: Mx = Dx/Px
• mortality probabilities: qx = Mx/(1 + 0.5 Mx)
• survival probabilities: px = 1 - qx
• number surviving: lx = lx-1 px-1
• number dying: dx = lx – lx+1
• life years lived: Lx = lx+1 + 0.5lx
• total life years lived: Tx = Tx+1 + Lx
• life expectancy: ex = Tx/lx
