INTRODUCTION

Total electricity energy production:

- 80% by Thermal, hydral
- 20% by MHD, nuclear, Solar,
In India constructed at Trichi in Tamilnadu by
BARC and BHEL.
MHD is a flow of conducting fluid in presence of
magnetic and electric field.
MHD generator is a device for converting heat
energy of fuel directly into electrical energy.
It is having design output of 1000 MW.
Principle of MHD generation

Based on faraday law of

electromagnetic
induction.

Use gaseous conductor-

an ionized gas.

Plasma
Induced e.m.f.

Principle of MHD conversion

SEEDING

Way of increasing the conductivity of gas.

Without an increase in temperature.
Introducing a material with ionization potential
lower than that of gas atoms.
Seeding material used cesium, potassium.
Conductivity achieved between 10-100 mhos/m in
temperature 2000-2400 oK.
MHD SYSTEM

Types:
OPEN CYCLE SYSTEM
CLOSED CYCLE SYSTEM

OPEN CYCLE SYSTEM

Working fluid is used as once through basis
Discharge to atmosphere through stack

CLOSED CYCLE SYSTEM

Working fluid is continuously recerculated
Fuel is reheated and supplied to converter
OPEN CYCLE SYSTEM
OPEN CYCLE SYSTEM

Outline

Working fluid used – heated, ionized air.

Hot gases offer seeding and can be directly used

as a working fluid.

High working efficiency and better thermal

efficiency can achieved.

Produce a direct current converted to A.C. by

converter.
CLOSED CYCLE SYSTEM
CLOSED CYCLE SYSTEM

Outline

Heat source and working fluid are independent.

Working fluid is Argon and Helium with Cesium

seeding.

Gas is compressed and heat is supplied by fuel.

Heat source used is gas cooled nuclear reactor.

Heat is transferred to the fluid through heat

exchanger.
MHD DESIGN PROBLEMS AND
DEVELOPMENT
Problems:

Lower efficiency attained.

Life of equipment is short due to corrosion by hot
combustion gases e.g. generator channel, electrode,
air preheater.
Separation of seed material from fly ash is difficult
and re-conversion is difficult.
Development:

To use hydrogen gas made from coal and water,

when it burned with oxygen the product is high
temperature steam to drive the turbine.
Advantages of MHD system

D LARGE AMOUNT OF POWER GENERATION
V NO MOVING PARTS

N ABILITY TO REACH FULL POWER LEVEL
T SIZE OF PLANT IS SMALLER

A LOWER OPERATIONAL COST

G
REDUCE LOSSES OF ENENRGY
