Bacterial Vaginitis
Upset in vaginal bacteria May be unpleasant (fish like odor) discharge

or no signs/symptoms at all {84%} Increases susceptibility for other STI infections Complications with pregnancy
Pre-term delivery, low birth weight

 Treated with antibiotics

Female partners should be treated, as well

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

May lead to infertility Result of bacteria (gonorrhea/chlamydia)

infecting internal reproductive organs Broad symptoms: discharge, burning during urination, abdominal or pelvic pain, pain during sex, or bleeding between cycles Treated with lots of antibiotics, possible hospitalization or surgery
ALL partner should be treated

Chlamydia
Silent : symptoms 1-3 weeks post exposure
Abnormal discharge, burning with urination Rectal pain/bleeding and throat infection

Most commonly reported STI in US (TX has

12.4% +) Recommended yearly screening for women who are < 25 years old. Treated with antibiotics
Treat ALL partners, re-test within 3 months, high risk of re-infection without treatment

Gonorrhea
Lover : Anus, eyes, mouth, genitals, and

throat Symptoms 2-5 days or up to 30 days

Men: green/yellow discharge, burning urination Women: no specifics-often mistaken for bladder or vaginal infection, burning /painful urination

 Treated with antibiotics (multi-drug resistant

strains), easily re-infected

ALL partners should be treated

Trichomaniasis

Men: mild penile irritation or discharge, burning after ejaculation or urination Women: frothy, yellow-green discharge, painful urination and intercourse

 Treated with antiprotozoals

Asymptomatic men should be treated because they can continue to re-infect Most curable

Human Papilloma Virus (Genital Warts)

Most common STD , over 40 types
Cancers Warts

Latent, cleared through body within 2 years Vaccines for men and women NO treatment for virus, only treat symptoms

Syphilis
 3 stages
1st: chancre within 10-20 days, lasts 3-6 weeks, heals on its own 2nd: non-itchy, full-body rash (mucous membranes, palms & feet), cold like symptoms + patchy hair loss 3rd: 10-20 years all organ systems damaged leading to dementia, blindness, paralysis, and death

Direct contact with sore (not through toilet

seats, doorknobs, sharing utensils, pools) Resurgence amongst young people, most commonly men who have sex with men Treat ALL partners, potential for re-infection

Herpes Simplex II
Transmission even if partner is asymptomatic
HSV 2 is genital infection HSV 1 is lips, mouth, and nasal

1-2 weeks clusters of sometimes painful

blisters leading to ulcers; 2-4 weeks to heal ; multiple outbreaks per year No cure
Antivirals help shorten outbreaks & control symptoms

Hepatitis (B & C)
 No vaccine
Blood-borne virus transmitted through sex and IV drug use

Destroys your liver Possible death without treatment No outright symptoms, detected through

blood test around 6 months later

Rigorous medication regiment to reduce viral load Immunoglobulin after exposure may prevent seroconversion

HIV/AIDS
Hijacks your immune system to reproduce Eventual death from opportunistic infections

because your immune system is ineffective

No longer able to protect body from infections

No cure Intensive daily medication therapy
