Bangalore – A
Case Study
Bangalore is widely regarded as the “Silicon Valley
of India” because of its role as the nation's
leading IT exporter.
Bangalore Smart City has both area-based and
pan-city development projects. They are about
road construction, retrofitting of buildings, transit
hubs, market development, command and control
centers, and lake development.
Just 23% of the smart city projects have been
completed so far. However, according to Vinayak
Sugur, there are no projects in tendering stage and
all the ongoing projects are works in progress.

A Comparative
Analysis - Dharnai
Dharnai is the first village in India to be fully solar
powered.
It allows children to study even beyond the daylight
hours and lifts the restriction on women to cook before
it is dark. Moreover, women in Dharnai can now venture
out after it is dark due to the street lights.
Residents of Dharnai had been using diesel-based
generators and hazardous fuel like cow dung to meet the
electricity requirement for decades, which were both
costly and unhealthy. Since the launch of Greenpeace’s
solar-powered 100 kilowatt micro-grid in 2014, quality
electricity is being provided to more than 2,400 people
living in this village in Jehanabad district.

Overall Decrease In Poverty
And Increase In
Development
╸ About 70 per cent Indians live in rural areas: 2011 Census report
╸ For ‘inclusive’ development, the Government must focus on
them.
╸ We must give top priority to the development of ‘smart villages’
— preserving the sustainability of villages will positively impact
cities in the long run.

of all domestic migrants, move from rural to urban India, main reason being lack of
amenities and opportunities.

Smart Villages Are
Need Of The Hour
From this, it can be concluded that Smart
Cities can bring improvement if done
properly.
However, in creating an economic
balance, it is necessary to focus on
creation of Smart Villages to foster overall
growth and development.
