2
 The American Society of Mechanical
Engineers set up a committee in 1911 for the
purpose of formulating standard rules for the
construction of steam boilers & other
pressure vessels.

 This committee is now called the Boiler &

Pressure Vessel Committee.

 WORLDWIDE,THERE ARE VARIOUS
PRESSURE VESSELS FABRICATION
CODES IN USE

 THE EARLIEST CODE USED WAS

BS 5500, WHICH IS A BRITISH CODE
AND IS STILL IN USE

 ASME CODE IS THE WIDELY

USED CODE TODAY

6
 THE ASME SECTION VIII IS USED FOR
THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW UNFIRED
PRESSURE VESSELS.

 IT HAS THREE DIVISIONS:

 DIVISION 1(S8/1)

 DIVISION 2(S8/2)

 DIVISION 3(S8/3)

 SOME IMPORTANT POINTS FOR EACH

DIVISION ARE GIVEN IN THE
FOLLOWING SLIDES.
7
 DIVISION 1 : RULES FOR
CONSTRUCTION OF PRESSURE VESSELS

 DIVISION 2 : ALTERNATIVE RULES FOR

CONSTRUCTION OF PRESSURE VESSELS

 DIVISION 3 : ALTERNATIVE RULES FOR

CONTRUCTION OF HIGH PRESSURE
VESSELS

8
 S8/1 (DESIGN & TEST CRITERIA)

 Pressure = 3000 psi (MAX.)

 Temperature = No limitation
 Factor of safety = 3.5 Note the change,
Earlier 1.5

 Hydro test = 1.3 x Design pressure

 Pneumatic test = 1.1 x Design pressure
 Operating cycles = 100 – 10 6 Note the change,
Earlier 1.25

 Radiography = Spot TO 100%

 STATIC & MOBILE VESSELS
PERMITTED
9
 S8/2 (DESIGN & TEST CRITERIA)

 Pressure = No limitation
 Temperature = No limitation
 Factor of safety = 3
 Hydro test = 1.25 x Design pressure
 Pneumatic test = 1.15 x Design pressure
 Operating cycles = 100 – 10 6
 NDT = 100%
 Fatigue analysis required
 Proximity analysis of nozzles required
 ONLY STATIC.NO MOBILE VESSELS
PERMITTED

HOW TO USE THE CODE S8/1

 DIVISION 1 CONSISTS OF THREE

SUBSECTIONS

 SUBSECTION A

 SUBSECTION B

 SUBSECTION C

 SUBSECTION A:

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
(PART-UG)

THIS SECTION COVERS THE SCOPE OF

THE CODE & GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
FOR ALL METHODS OF CONTRUCTION
& ALL MATERIALS

12
 SUBSECTION B:
REQUIREMENTS PERTAINING TO METHODS OF
FABRICATION OF PRESSURE VESSELS

THIS SUBSECTION CONSISTS OF THREE

PARTS:

PART UW : WELDING
 PART UF : FORGING

 PART UB : BRAZING

13
 SUBSECTION C:

REQUIREMENTS PERTAINING TO
CLASSES OF MATERIALS

THIS SUBSECTION HAS 9 PARTS WHICH

ARE AS FOLLOWS:

14
 PART UCS : CARBON & LOW ALLOY STEELS
 PART UNF : NON FERROUS MATERIALS
 PART UHA : HIGH ALLOY STEEL
 PART UCI : CAST IRON
 PART UCL : CLADDING
 PART UCD : CAST DUCTILE IRON
 PART UHT : HEAT TREATMENT
 PART ULW : LAYERED CONSTRUCTION
 PART ULT : LOW TEMPERATURE

 MANDATORY APPENDICES

 NONMANDATORY APPENDICES

17
 THERE ARE 31 MANDATORY APPENDICES IN ASME
SECTION VIII DIVISION 1

 APPENDICES CONCERNING/RELATED TO NDT ARE:

 APPENDIX 4 (RADIOGRAPHY EXAMINATION)

 APPENDIX 6 (MAGNETIC PARTICLE EXAMINATION)
 APPENDIX 8 (LIQUID PENETRANT EXAMINATION)
 APPENDIX 12 (ULTRASONIC EXAMINATION)

THESE APPENDICES ALSO GIVES THE ACCEPTANCE

CLAUSES IMPORTANT FOR

INSPECTION & TESTING IN PART-UG

OF SUBSECTION A
ARE:

 UG-93 : Inspection Of Materials

 UG-99 : Hydrostatic Test
 UG-100 : Pneumatic Test
 UG-102 : Test Gages
 UG-103 : NDT

19
CLAUSES IMPORTANT FOR
INSPECTION & TESTING IN PART-UW
OF SUBSECTION B
ARE:
 UW-47 : Welding Procedure

 UW-48 : Welder & Welding Operator

Qualification

 UW-49 : Post Weld Heat Treatment

20
 Please Note The Pressure Vessel Code
Section-VIII Is Not Complete In Itself.
It Asks Us To Refer :

 Section – IX (Welding & Brazing Qualifications)

&

 Section – V (Non Destructive Examination)
