Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is a discipline that advances
knowledge in engineering, biology and medicine and
improves human health through cross-disciplinary
activities that integrate the engineering sciences with
biomedical sciences and clinical practice.

4
Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering includes-
• The acquisition of new knowledge and understanding
of living systems through the innovative and
substantive application of experimental and
analytical techniques based on the engineering.

5
Biomedical Engineering
• The development of new devices, algorithms,
processes and systems that advance biology and
medicine and improve medical practice and health
care delivery.

Interdisciplinary Fields
BEN = Bioengineering
BPH = Biophysics
BEM = Bioelectromagnetism
MPH = Medical Physics
MEN = Medical Engineering
MEL = Medical Electronics

8
Working Area of Biomedical Engineer
• Government positions often involve product testing and safety as well as
establishing safety standards for devices.
• In the hospitals, the biomedical engineer may provide advice on the selection
and use of medical equipment as well as supervising its performance testing and
maintenance. They may also build customized devices for special health care or
research needs.
• In research institutions, biomedical engineers supervise laboratories and
equipment and participate in or direct research activities in collaboration with
other researchers having such backgrounds as medicine, physiology and nursing.

9
Career Preparation of Biomedical Engineer
• First and foremost requirement is to be a good
engineer.
• Understanding of life sciences and terminology.
• Good communication skills.
• Excellent knowledge of physiology.
• Knowledge on disease altering, functions.
10
Activities of Bioengineers
• Development of improved species of plants and
animals for food production.
• Invention of new medical diagnostic tests for
diseases.
• Production of synthetic vaccines from clone cells
• Study of protein-surface interactions.
11
Activities of Bioengineers
• Modeling of the growth kinetics of yeast and
hybridoma cells.
• Research in immobilized enzyme technology.
• Development of therapeutic proteins and
monoclonal antibodies.

12
Activities of Biomedical Engineer
• Application of engineering system analysis (physiologic
modeling, simulation and control) to biologic problems.
• Detection, measurement and monitoring of physiologic
signals (i.e. biosensors and biologic problems).
• Diagnostic interpretation via signal processing
techniques of bioelectric data.

13
Activities of Biomedical Engineer
• Therapeutic and rehabilitation procedures and devices
(rehabilitation engineering).
• Devices for replacement or augmentation of bodily
functions (artificial organs).
• Computer analysis for patient related data and clinical
decision making (medical informatics and artificial
intelligence).
14
Activities of Biomedical Engineer
• Medical imaging, that is the graphic display of
anatomic detail or physiologic function.
• The creation of new biologic products (i.e.
biotechnology and tissue engineering).
• The development of new materials to be used within
the body (biomaterials).
15
Typical Pursuits of Biomedical Engineer
• Research in new materials for implanted artificial
organs.

• Writing software for analysis of medical research
data.
• Analysis of medical device hazards for safety and
efficacy.
• Development of new diagnostic imaging systems.

physiologic systems variables.
• Development of expert systems for diagnosis of disease.
• Design of closed-loop control systems for drug
administration.
• Modeling of the physiologic systems of the human body.
