The document discusses the six essential nutrients required for human health: carbohydrates, protein, fat, water, vitamins, and minerals. Carbohydrates, protein and fat provide energy, aid growth and repair, and regulate temperature. Water hydrates cells and flushes waste. Vitamins and minerals support various functions like vision, immune function, blood clotting and bone health. Without sufficient intake of these six nutrients, the body cannot function properly and poor health can result from dehydration or malnourishment.

Nutrition and the six essential
nutrients What is a nutrient?
• Essential nutrients are compounds that the
body can’t make or can’t make in sufficient quantity. • These nutrients must come from food, and they’re vital for disease prevention, growth, and good health. 6 essential nutrients
• Without these nutrients, our bodies won’t
function properly and can result in dehydration or malnourishment which can both end in poor health. • Carbohydrates *Water • Protein *Vitamins • Fat *Minerals Carbohydrates • Carbohydrates provide the most (and best) energy for our bodies. • There are two types of carbs: Simple carbs: are easy for the body to break down, so the body doesn't’t get as good of work out while digesting them. Complex carbs: are harder to break down and healthier for your body Carbohydrates should provide 50-60% of your calories daily. Examples: complex - whole grain bread, brown rice, vegetables simple – candy, soft drinks, junk foods Protein
• Protein helps repair and rebuild cells,
including hair, skin, and muscle. • Protein bonds damaged cells together and makes them stronger (like welding) • 10-20% of your calories should come from protein each day. • Examples: fish, beef, nuts and seeds Fats
• Fat in the body helps with temperature
regulation, long-term energy storage and protection for organs. • Unsaturated fats are important for your body as they provide essential fatty acids your body can’t make. You can find these healthy fats in nuts, seeds, fish, and vegetable oils (like olive, avocado, and flaxseed) Fats(cont.)
•Avoid trans fats and limit your intake of
saturated animal-based fats like butter, cheese, red meat, and ice cream. Water
• Water hydrates the body and carries
oxygen to cells; cells need oxygen to survive and stay healthy. • Water also helps flush waste through the body so that our body stays fresh and healthy. Should drink 8 glasses per day. • Examples: water, fresh fruits and some vegetables Vitamins • Different vitamins help with different functions in the body. Some examples include: Vitamin A Helps with healthy hair Carrots, squash and skin Vitamin C Helps fight germs and Orange juice, illnesses broccoli
Vitamin K Helps blood clotting, Green leafy vegetables
helping to heal wounds and like kale, spinach, turnip helps keep bones healthy. greens, collards, Swiss chard, mustard greens, parsley, romaine, and green leaf lettuce. Minerals • Similar to vitamins, minerals help with a variety of different functions within the body. Some examples include: Calcium Makes strong bones Milk, cheese, and teeth yogurt Iron Helps keep blood Tofu, spinach, red healthy meat
