ELECTRICAL DOUBLE

LAYER

G-10
OBJECTIVE
• Definition of electrical double layer
• Parts of electrical double layer
• Relationship DVLO and electrical double layer
• Relationship zeta potential and electrical
double layer
• Application electrical double layer in life
DEFINITION

Electrical double layer is a structure

that appears on the surface of an
object when it is placed into a liquid.

Electrical Double Layer is essential for

the mechanism of the electrostatic
stabilization of colloids.
• Electrical Double Layer consists of layer
surrounding the particle of dispersed phased,
adsorbed ions on the particles surface, and
the countercharged dispersion medium.
• Electrical Double Layer is electrically neutral.
• The double layer refers to two parallel layers of
charge surrounding the object.
• The first layer which known as Stern layer is the
surface charge which comprises ions adsorbed
directly to the object due to chemical interactions.
• The second layer which known as diffuse layer is
composed of free ions moving in the fluid under
influence of electric attraction and thermal
motion.
Parts of electrical double layer:
a) Surface charge- negatively charged ions
adsorbed on particle surface.
b) Stern layer- positively charged ions
attracted to the particle surface and
attached by electrostatic force.
c) Diffuse layer- contains free ions with
higher counter ions concentrations. It is
affected by the electrostatic force
produced by the charged particle.

Electrical
Double Layer

Slipping plane (shear plane)- a layer of

surrounding liquid attached to the particle
when the colloid particle moves in the
dispersion medium. Zeta potential is the
value of electrical potential at slipping plane.
• DVLO involve combination of two forces that
are acting on the colloid particle
• The forces are Van der Waals forces (attractive
force) and electrical double layer (repulsive
force)
• Stability:
a)Attractive > repulsive = flocculation(not stable)
b)Repulsive > attractive = no flocculation(stable)
EXAMPLE
• Milk exists only because fat droplets are
covered with a double layer that prevent
their coagulation into butter.
• Can be found in heterogeneous fluid-based
systems, such as blood, paints, inks, ceramic
slurries and cement slurries.
CONCLUSION
• Electrical double layer is divided into 3 parts
which are Surface charge, Stern layer, and
Diffuse layer.
• Electrical double layer, DVLO, and Zeta
potential are related to stabilization of colloid.
