HUMAN PERSON AS

EMBODIED SPIRIT

By: SIR WEE

WHAT IS YOUR BELIEF ABOUT THE SOUL?
What is the concept of “Embodied Spirit?”

 “embodied” – it is being materialized or incarnated

 Thus,“embodied spirit” we normally perceived of a spirit
being incarnated.
Example:

God was incarnated on earth as Superman

Concept of Embodied Spirit
 Christian Philosophy believed that embodied spirit
refers to the inseparable union of body and soul.
Thus, the body is not separate from the soul nor the
soul is not separate from the body.
Human Person is an Embodied
Spirit
 It is the point of convergence between the material
and spiritual entities, that is, the body and soul.
 Aristotle calls it the “body” as the matter, and the
“soul” as the form. The union of matter and form.
Aristotle on the Human Person as Embodied Spirit

He believed about the union of the

body and soul
He reacted against Plato’s idea on the
nature of human person
Plato’s idea of the Human Person as Embodied
Spirit

 Human person can be seen in the metaphysical

dichotomy between the body and soul.
 According to Plato, the body as material – mutable
and destructible. On the other hand, the soul as
immaterial – immutable and indestructible
 Therefore, Plato believed that the body’s existence
is dependent on the soul while the soul’s existence
is independent to the body.
Plato writes:
“The Gods made the soul prior
to the body and more
venerable in birth and
excellence to the body’s
mistress and governor”
Three types of soul according to Plato

1. The RATIONAL
2. The SPIRITUAL
3. The APPETITIVE
Types of SOUL
 RATIONAL SOUL is located in the HEAD
 SPIRITUAL SOUL is located in the CHEST
 APPETITIVE SOUL is located in the ABDOMEN

According to Plato, the spiritual and appetitive souls

contribute to the motion and activity of the whole
person, while rational soul’s function is to guide the
spiritual and appetitive.
You were in the middle of nowhere in the desert.
 The appetitive soul drives the human person to
experience thirst, hunger, and other physical wants.
 The spiritual soul drives the human person to
experience abomination, anger, and other emotional
feelings
 The rational soul enables the human person to
think, reflect, analyze, comprehend, draw
conclusions, and the like.
A man who is out of anger
For Plato
1. Desire MOTIVATES
2. Spirit SOUL ANIMATES
GUIDES
3. Reason

The Human Person will attain a well-balanced

personality
The comparison of the body and the soul

 For Plato, the soul is imprisoned in the body and

that the soul survives the death of the body:
IMMATERIAL, IMMUTABLE,
INDESTRUCTIBLE

 The body decompose and the soul will go back to

the world of forms and will live eternally
Aristotle’s idea about the human person as embodied
spirit

He disagrees Plato’s notion about the

dichotomy of the body and soul.

He believed that the body and soul is

in the state of unity

The soul and the body is inseparable

We cannot talk about the soul being

separated with the body or vice versa
Aristotle concept of soul
 Soul – concept of life
 Soul – principle of life (which means anything that
has life has a soul)

LIFE = SOUL = BODY TO LIVE

Therefore, it is the soul that animates the body

SOUL= the animator of the body
BODY = the matter of the soul
Three levels of souls
1. Plants
2. Animals
3. Humans

VEGETATI

SENSITI
VE
RATIONA
Plants have soul because
they possess the three basic
requirements: Grow,
reproduce and feed itself

Animals and humans are

capable of growing,
reproducing and feeding
RATIONAL SOUL
 Grow, reproduce, feed, feel
 Capable of thinking
 This highest level of soul is present only in
HUMANS

Therefore, Aristotle concluded in his dictum “MAN

is a RATIONAL ANIMAL”

GROUP 2 – MAGKANO
GROUP 3 – OWS
GROUP 4 – TALAGA
The GOAL is to maintain STABILITY which means
that every group must not result to any kind of
violation that will lose its members. Any members
who commit a violation will be eliminated.
What happen to the group?
 What hinders you to attain good collaboration?
 Did your group give their best to achieve the goal?
 Are there any miscommunication? Or
misunderstandings?
 What are the limitations of the group to achieve the
goal?
Limitations and Possibilities for transcendence

Limitations of transcendence
 may not occur to everyone

 Does not come at a specified period

 Varies across all people

 May coincide with physical limitations of the body

Possibilities for transcendence
 Developing a positive outlook in life

 Working towards reaching a goal

 Learning from experience

The human body imposing limits and possibilities

 From biological and physical standpoint, it can be

recognized that the human body, although it can
perform many functions, also has limitations.
Limits in the environment, demographics, and
society may also hinder a person from reaching
transcendence.
BODY LIMITATIONS
 Mental and emotional disorders (anxiety,
intellectual disability)
 Disabilities (amputated leg, deafness)
 Diseases and illnesses (hypertension, cough)
 Failures and experiences
SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITATIONS

 Socioeconomic status
 Abusive relationships
 Negative influences
OVERCOMING LIMITATIONS
 Body limits can be tested by trying on new
experiences and working on challenges with
increasing levels of difficulty.
OVERCOMING LIMITATIONS
 Social and environmental limitations are more
difficult to overcome than bodily limitations
because they involve the influence of other people
and the external world. However, with a proper
mindset, clearly defined foals, and motivation to
rise above challenges, one may successfully
overcome his or her limitations.
