LET US
THINK…
Chromosomes contain DNA inside the nucleus on each
cell. Replication is essential for cell division to occur. Cell
division is important for growth & development and repair
of damage tissues. DNA replication ensures that each new
cell receives its own original copy of DNA.

Q3 – BIOLOGY 10: DNA REPLICATION, TRANSCRIPTION & TRANSLATION 3

LET US
THINK…
A DNA is a double helix molecule
composed of complementary strands of
deoxyribonucleotides units. The
complementary base pairs of the DNA
are held together by hydrogen bonds.
In DNA adenine (A) pairs with
thymine (T) while guanine (G) pairs
with cytosine (C).

Q3 – BIOLOGY 10: DNA REPLICATION, TRANSCRIPTION & TRANSLATION 4

LET US
THINK…
╸ Transcription is the process by which
the information in a strand of DNA is
copied into a new molecule of
messenger RNA (mRNA).
╸ There are three major types of RNA that
help build proteins: mRNA, rRNA and
tRNA.

Translation is the process which
determines the order of bases in mRNA of
amino acids into a protein. It occurs in a
ribosome in the cytoplasm.
