Family

Group of individuals living in relationship of mutual fulfilment ensuring

right understanding & prosperity for all

Family is a training ground:

1. To understand relationship & to live in relationship  happiness
2. To understand need of physical facility & to produce more than required
physical facility  prosperity
Harmony in the Family

1. Relationship is – between one self (I1) and other self (I2)

2. There are feelings in relationship – in one self (I1) for other self (I2)
3. These feelings can be recognized – they are definite (9 Feelings)
4. Their fulfilment, evaluation leads to mutual happiness

4. In Nature/Existence

Excellence and competition are not similar.

In excellence, one helps to bring the other to his level
In competition, he hinders the other from reaching to his level

Check for yourself –

In relationship, what is the priority

- of right understanding & right feelings (needs of self(I))
- of physical facility (needs of body)

What is the role of physical facility in the fulfillment of right feelings?

In relationship, where would you start:

1. Expect right feelings from the other
2. Take responsibility to understand relationship, ensure right feelings
in yourself and express them to the other
Review the Exchange in Relationship
This depends on the assumption about human being, about relationship,
about common purpose…

Right understanding, right feelings & Primarily physical facility*

physical facility, in that order

The explicit understanding is that The implicit assumption is that

human being is co-existence of human being = body
self & body = resource

Our common purpose is mutual The goal is maximisation of profit,

development. The exchange of sensation
physical facility is only a part of
this program * physical facility is used as a means
or a tool; or to get sensation
The focus is on exchange of right (sound, touch, sight, taste, smell)

ROE 088/ Unit-III 45

Identification of Comprehensive human
Goal
 Implication of the right understanding
visualization of comprehensive human goal
 Human goal must be conducive to human welfare in a
 holistic and
 sustainable manner
 A model of human living must be
 people friendly and
 eco-friendly and
therefore, mutually fulfilling as well as sustainable.
 Urgent need to evaluate the education, healthcare systems,
technologies, production systems and the models for commercial
activity and management.
Note: Presently, human welfare is primarily perceived in economic terms only which is the
source of many problems

ROE 088/ Unit-III 46

Comprehensive Human Goal
 1. Right Understanding and freedom from contradictions at the
individual level (Samãdhãna)- In every individual
 2. Prosperity and its continuity at the level of family
(Samriddhi)- In every family
 3. Fearlessness and mutual trust (Abhaya)- In the society
 4. Co-existence (Sah-astitva) - In the nature
Such a comprehensive objective will be conducive to the
welfare of all for all times.
 This will apply to all the human beings on earth.
 Facilitating and empowering human beings towards the
fulfilment of the above-mentioned comprehensive human
goal is real human welfare.

ROE 088/ Unit-III 47

On the basis of Comprehensive Human
Goal
 Identify the goals of any organization/system
 evaluate whether the goals set by the system are
 humane or not.
 comprehensive or having a limited vision.
Once we are able to identify the comprehensive human goal, it becomes clear
to us that in all our programs, this is going to be the primary motivation.
 If any program is not setting these, it is not going to be fit for the society
and human welfare.
 In terms of these goals, we can evaluate the inadequacies in the prevalent
 education system,
 judiciary system,
 administration and
 governance,
 market policies and other such systems.

Vision for the Holistic Change
 We have seen that nobody accepts naturally to do wrong, we just
have to provide the right direction to facilitate this.
 There is an urgent need to
 initiate research and development in this direction as our
present model of living is proving to be more and more
problematic and unsustainable.
 focus on the
 development of right understanding among human
beings and
 the commitment to live accordingly
 Development of the requisite skills and know-how to
implement the right understanding in real life..

ROE 088/ Unit-III 50

Humanistic Education
 In the first place, it calls for a change in the education system
towards humanistic education.
 The right understanding provides us with the vision of such a
humanistic education.
 Education means to imbibe the understanding of harmony at all
the levels of living. It is not just reading, writing and arithmetic,
but rather a process to enable the human being to live in
accordance to the natural acceptance.
 It calls for a major shift in vision and emphasis as comparison to
the existing system.

of
 an un-fragmented human society and
 a universal human order.
 Working towards the
 comprehensive human goal and
 developing the competence for ethical human conduct
will be among the salient directive principles of a humanistic
constitution. It will safeguard the social justice in true sense.

ROE 088/ Unit-III 53

Humanistic Constitution cont’d

 Presently, the human society is divided into various castes,

creeds, religions and nationalities whose objectives and interests
are proving contrary to those of others.
 Accordingly, a major part of human effort is used in handling
 these conflicts and contradictions.
 in preparing themselves for war, only to ensure peace!
 This can only be there because of our ignorance, because of our
incorrect assumptions/beliefs about happiness and about reality.

ROE 088/ Unit-III 54

Humanistic Constitution cont’d

 Things can only be set right by developing human

consciousness, by developing right understanding and living
among people and in no other way.
 Thus, the right understanding also offers a satisfactory and
spontaneous resolution of the prevailing human conflicts
ranging from the family level and going up to the global level.
 As we know, the parameters of human welfare are universal, i.e.
commonly applicable to all human beings.

ROE 088/ Unit-III 55

Universal Human Order
• Everyone has feeling of being related to every
unit including human beings and other entities of
nature
• It is possible to move towards universal human order
with help of suitable policies evolved through right
understanding.
• Understanding of harmony gives the notion of an
undivided society and universal human order.

Ajay Agarwal

ROE 088/ Unit-III
Content
1:- Behavior, culture and civilization
2:- Undivided Society as justice in Behavior,
Culture and Civilization.

ROE 088/ Unit-III

Role of Behavior in value education
Behavior is expressing feelings from one self to other self so that
its fulfilment and evaluation must lead to mutual happiness
Role of culture in Value education
• The term ‘culture’ is a Latin origin of the world ‘cultus’, which refers to cultivating or refining
something, in such a way that it provides admiration and respect.
• In finer terms, culture is the way people live, reflected in the language they spoke, food they eat,
clothes they wear and the Diet they follow or worship.
• An individual is a social animal and culture of the society has a big influence on the individual. The
beliefs and traditions form the culture of the society.
• It expresses the manner in which one thinks and do things.
• All of these have a certain worth which adds value to the mind and education of the individual.
• An individual belongs to a society that is civilized and has a framework of culture and values which
add to the development of a person and shapes the behaviour of the society where the individual
lives.
• Culture helps in molding the thinking pattern and traditions of society.

ROE 088/ Unit-III

Role of civilization in value education
• The term ‘civilization’ is derived from a Latin term ‘civis’
which indicates ‘someone who resides in a town’.
• Civilization refers to the physical development of the
society. It forms the structure of the society where the
individual lives.
• Civilization is described as a process of civilizing or say
developing the state of human society, to the extent
that the culture, industry, technology, government, etc.
reaches the maximum level.

ROE 088/ Unit-III

Difference between culture and civilisation
1. The term ‘culture’ refers to the embodiment of the manner in which we think, behave and act. On
the contrary, the improved stage of human society, where members have the considerable
amount of social and political organisation and development, is called Civilization.
2. Our culture describes what we are, but our civilization explains what we have or what we make
use of.
3. Culture is an end; it has no measurement standards. As against this, civilization has precise
measurement standards, because it is a means.
4. The culture of a particular region can be reflected in religion, art, dance, literature, customs,
morals, music, philosophy, etc. On the other hand, the civilization is exhibited in the law,
administration, infrastructure, architecture, social arrangement, etc. of that area.

ROE 088/ Unit-III

Difference between culture and civilisation

5. Culture denote the greatest level of inner refinement, and so it is

internal. Unlike, civilization which is external, i.e. it is the expression
of state of the art technology, product, devices, infrastructure and so
forth.
6. Change in culture is observed with time, as in the old thoughts and
traditions lost with the passage of time and new ones are added to it
which are then transmitted from one generation to another. On the flip
side, civilization is continuously advancing, i.e. the various elements of
civilization like means of transportation, communication, etc. are
developing day by day.
7. Culture can evolve and flourish, even if the civilization does not exist.
In contrast, civilization cannot grow and exist without culture.

ROE 088/ Unit-III

Concluding Remarks

• Without the ship we could not sail at all; according to the

character of the ship we sail fast or slow, take longer or
shorter voyages. But the direction in which we travel is not
predestined by the design of the ship. The more efficient it
is; the more ports lie within the range of our choosing”.
• In short, civilisation is the driving force of society. Culture is
its steering wheel.
• Conclusion
Culture and civilisation both are created by human
and are means to express the way we lead our lives.

1. Relationship is (it already exists – we just need to realise it) –

between one self (I1) and other self (I2)

2. The base of relationship is feelings – in one self (I1) for other self (I2)

3. These feelings are definite (9 Feelings) – they can be understood

4. Justice in relationship is understanding relationship, acceptance of

relationship, having the right feelings, expressing these feelings, right
evaluation of these feelings leading to mutual happiness
Having the right understanding & right feeling in myself leads to my happiness
Expressing (sharing) these feelings to the other & it’s right evaluation by the other leads
to his/her happiness

Relationship
1. Human is co-existence of self and body. It is self that
understands and has feelings. The body is not capable of
understanding as well as having feelings. The self recognizes
the relationship.
2. Hence, relationship exists between the self and the other self.
The relation to the body is through self.
3. Feelings in relationship is natural. These are neither created
nor removed. These feelings are basis of relationship and can
be recognized.
4. The feelings in relationships are actually definite and not
vague. These relationships have values such as TRUST,
RESPECT, AFFECTION etc. Trust is wanted in relationship
and if there is mutual feeling of trust, then it gives mutual
fulfillment.
5. Justice is the recognition of values in relationship, their
fulfillment, their right evaluation.
ROE 088/ Unit-III 73

Ideal human goal
• Human goal is:
1. right understanding in every individual,
2. prosperity in every family,
3. fearlessness or trust in every society and
4. co-existence in nature.
• Right understanding is necessary for everybody or one
remains disturbed and creates disharmony.
• Prosperity is need of every family, so one should identify the
needs and produce more than required.
• If there is trust in society, then every member feels related to
everyone and so there is fearlessness.
• There is relationship among all the entities in nature including
humans and this is co-existence in nature.
ROE 088/ Unit-III 76
Understanding the harmony in the society
(Society being an extension of family)
• Harmony in the family is the building block for harmony in the
society.
• Harmony in the society leads to an undivided society (Akhand
Samaj) when we feel related with each other.

• Identification of the comprehensive human goal:

Present status of program
1. Lack of understanding of body as instrument. The self is
coupled with the technological process.
2. People are living more on medication and producing more
diseases.
3. The court of law is unable to provide justice in majority of
cases.
4. Legal suits is increasing excessively, families are breaking for
small gains, communal violence and conflicts between fractions
of society.
5. Natural resources have been depleted to a large extent. Birds,
animals, forests are reducing abnormally
6. Pollution of air, water, soil are increasing.
7. Production is many times more than we need, thus instead of
right utilization, there is exploitation of natural resources.

ROE 088/ Unit-III 79

Conclusion

• Coexistence means learning to live together, to

accept diversity and implies a positive relationship
to the other. Our identities are defined in relation
to the other.
• When relationships are affirmative and equal it
enhances dignity and freedom and independence.
• When relations are negative and destructive this
undermines human dignity and our own self
worth.
• This applies to personal, group and interstate
relationships.
