TYPES OF

VOLCANOES
According to the shape of the
cone and frequency of
eruptions.

PRESENTED BY: FHER ADRIAN G. BALINGIT

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of discussion, the student
will be able to:
• Identify and differentiate the 4
various types of volcano according
to shape
• Identify and differentiate the 3s
various types of volcano according
to their frequency of eruption
• Enumerate volcanoes nationwide
and identify their type
• Understand how volcanic eruption
affects the shape of volcano and vice
versa.
What is
a Volcano?
• A volcano is a vent that
directly connects magma to
the surface of the Earth.

• Having a crater or vent

through which lava, rock
fragments, hot vapor, and
gas are being or have been
erupted from the earth's
crust.

1. Cinder cone
AKA Scoria Cone
• Less dangerous compared to
other types.

• The opening of a cinder cone is a

cone-shaped structure, while the
steeps are formed of the erupted,
fragmented cinders that fall close
to the chimney/vent.
Cinder cone
AKA Scoria Cone
• The manner of eruption for
cinder cones is relatively
simple. When the lava erupts,
cinders of it are blown into the
air. These fragmented cinders
fall a short distance from the
opening, thus creating the
cone.
2. Shield Volcanoes
• Shield volcanoes can be very,
very big in size. However, they
are not as dangerous as that size
might make it seem. seem. This
is because the eruption of lava
out of shield volcanoes is not
accompanied by pyroclastic
material

3. Composite Volcanoes
• Are also known as strato
volcanoes
• Their eruptions are
dangerous and explosive in
nature, with many layers of
lava and pyroclastic
materials. (1,800°F , 450
mph)
4. Lava Dome
Volcanoes
• Lava domes are of
significantly smaller stature.
• They are formed when the
lava is too viscous to flow to
a great distance
• Generally, such lava domes
are found on the flanks of
larger composite volcanoes.
