Java is a Programming Language
The word “Java” meaning is “Hot Coffee”
Developed by a team lead by James Gosling

• Who drank a lot of coffee while working on the language.
• Java coffee beans
• They named their developed language as JAVA
• It was originally named as OAK later named as JAVA

Your First Program – FirstProgram.java

1.System: It is a final class defined in the java.lang package.

2.out: This is an instance of PrintStream type, which is a public and static
member field of the System class.
3.println(): As all instances of PrintStream class have a public method
println(), hence we can invoke the same on out as well. This is an
upgraded version of print(). It prints any argument passed to it and
adds a new line to the output. We can assume that System.out
represents the Standard Output Stream.

Save the file as FirstProgram.java
Compile the java program using javac compiler
C:\>javac FirstProgram.java
Run the program using the Java Virtual Machine

float 4 bytes Stores fractional numbers. Sufficient for storing 6 to 7 decimal digits
double 8 bytes Stores fractional numbers. Sufficient for storing 15 decimal digits
boolean 1 bit Stores true or false values

• Rules of Declaring variables in Java
• A variable name can consist of Capital letters A-Z, lowercase
letters a-z, digits 0-9, and two special characters such as
underscore and dollar Sign.
• The first character must be a letter/underscore.
• Blank spaces cannot be used in variable names.
• Java keywords cannot be used as variable names.
