Pronouns

• Personal pronouns are used to represent the number of people


(I/we), gender (he/she), person (I/you) and case (we/us).

• There are two types of Personal pronouns


▫ Subject
▫ Object
• We use he/him to refer to men, and she/her to refer to women.
When we are not sure if we are talking about a man or a woman
we use they/them.
Subject Pronouns
• We use subject pronouns as subject of the verb:
▫ I like your dress.
You are late.
He is my friend
It is raining
She is on holiday
We live in England.
They come from London

• Subject is usually at the beginning part of a sentence


Object Pronouns
• We use object pronouns:

▫ as the object of the verb:


 Can you help me please?
I can see you.
She doesn’t like him.
I saw her in town today.
We saw them in town yesterday, but they didn’t see us.

is Object
• Ask yourself this question;

Possessive Pronouns
• That is my bag = Itu beg saya
• That is your bag = Itu beg awak
• That is his bag= Itu beg dia (lelaki)
• That is her bag = Itu beg dia (perempuan)
• That is our bag = Itu beg kami
• That is their bag = Itu beg mereka
• That is its bag = Itu beg ia (Benda/haiwan)
• That bag is mine = Beg itu kepunyaan saya
• That bag is yours = Beg itu kepunyaan awak
• That bag is his= Beg itu kepunyaan dia (lelaki)
• That bag is hers = Beg itu kepunyaan dia
(perempuan)
• That bag is ours = Beg itu kepunyaan kami
• That bag is theirs = Beg itu kepunyaan mereka
• That bag is its = Beg itu kepunyaan ia
(Haiwan/benda)
Reflexive Pronouns
Reflexive pronouns are used
to indicate that both the
subject and the object of a
sentence receive the action
of the verb.
To make things easier to you, you must understand the
following table:
Personal Pronouns Reflexive Pronouns
I Myself
You Yourself
He Himself
She Herself
It Itself
We Ourselves
You Yourselves
They themselves
Ex: I cut myself in the kitchen.
It means that I was using a knife and I cut my finger.
More examples:

 He hurt himself when he fell off his skateboard.

 She usually talks to herself in front of the mirror.

 David read quietly to himself.

 We can trust in ourselves.

 The students can monitor themselves.


Note 1: Be careful with the uses
of yourself and yourselves.
 Yourself – singular form

You always blame yourself when something is wrong Bob.

 Yourselves – plural form

Mike and Tina, you must take care of yourselves.


Note 2: You can use reflexive pronouns after “by”
to emphasize that someone did something without
any help, or to say that someone is alone.

 I did the homework by myself.

 He lived in England for 6 years by himself.


Note 3: Do not use reflexive
pronouns after “with” meaning
“accompanied by”.

 Why didn’t you bring your sister with you?


Note 4: Do not use reflexive
pronouns when referring to places.

 You have to keep your experiment in front of you.


Note 5: Do not use reflexive pronouns with
verbs which describe actions that people
normally do to themselves.
 I usually shave in the morning.
