DEVELOPING WORK VIRTUES AND VALUES

THE IMPORTANCE OF WORK WILL NOT BE FULLY
APPRECIATED UNLESS THE VALUES AND VIRTUES
RELATED TO IT ARE PRACTICE IN ITS PERFORMANCE.
YOUR WORK BECOME A TRUE EXPRESSION OF
YOURSELF AND YOUR VALID CONTRIBUTION TO THE
FULFILMENT OF GOD’S PLAN IF THE DIFFERENT WORK
VALUES AND VIRTUES SHINE FORTH IN YOUR VARIOUS
TASK. YOU SHOULD BE READY TO DEVELOP THESE
VIRTUES AND VALUES RELATED TO WORK IF YOU WANT
TO SUCCEED IN YOUR ENDEAVOR.
LESSON 1: KNOWING AND DEVELOPING
MY
WORK VALUES
Values how you perform your work determine how people live
their lives. With respect to work, values influence how an
individual approaches and accomplish a task. You have a
number of values that affects how you perform the work.
These some values also determine what kind of output you will
have from work.
Work values play an important role in enhancing work
performance. Work values also affect group or team
performance. This is because your goals and actions are
grounded in your work values. You see this values to make
decision about your task and other daily activities.
What values are necessary for you to do your work
effectively, efficiency and successfully. Many work values
are important in doing one’s task well. Thse work values
include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Patience –is the capacity to endure hardship, difficulty
or inconvenience with calm, self-control and even
delight.
This value cultivate in you the belief that it may take
longer to finished a task, but it would eventually be done as
long as you keep going. Perhaps you have had the
experience of being impatient. But if you are bent on
accomplishing your task, because it is important to you and
you truly want to see it completed, you need learn
patience.
2. Perseverance – refers to the steady adherence to a course
or ACTION. Napoleon once said, “ Victory belons to him
who has the most perseverance.” Not all task are done
swiftly and easily. But a person who perseveres, who
persist in his or her work, is the one who achieve his or her
goals despite all the hardships and frustrations.
Success is achieve by persevering in a task and by not
allowing discouragement to take the upper hand.
3. Cooperation- means you are an active participant in the
decision and actions made by the group, rather than being
just a passive receiver of the decision of the group.. It is
also an indispensable value in working with others. It is a
value that recognizes the role of contribution of everyone
in the group. This means that the success of one member in
accomplishing his or her task truly benefit s the other
members.
4. Industriousness – Is doing what you have to do with
passion. A task may be easy or difficult but that has
nothing to do with being industrious. Being industrious
requires that you do not spare any effort to produce
something truly great. If you are industrious, you would
put in the extra time and effort needed to complete the task
at hand.
5. Work Excellence – Excellence one’s work means
completing a task according to the highest standard of
society. It entails extraordinary content , appealing
presentations , on time delivery, and possibly error free
production. Excellence in work going beyond what is
required and exceeding the normal expectation of society.
6. Initiative – is the ability to act without being urged. If you
have the initiative to work, you would not wait to be told
what to do or for things to happened. You need little
supervision and direction to work because you are able to
complete your task even if no one is watching you.
Initiative is an important wok value because it assures those
around you that you understand your responsibility and you
will do it without any prodding from others. It also tells them
that you do not need any reward , incentive , or approval to
do your tasks. Instead you are ready to take action and do
what you can and should do.
7. Dependability – means that others can count on you
when they need you. It means that when there is something
to do, you will be willing and ready to contribute and
help. Dependability does not mean that you will never turn
down a task given to you. Part of being dependable is to
know your limitations and the extent of your abilities. It is
better to refuse a task than to offer alibis for not
accomplishing what you have been expected to do.
