“Banana Stem-fiber as a substitute

for plastic bag in selected HSK

Students in San Pedro Relocation
Center National High School”
INTRODUCTION
 Humans are beginning to develop alternative solution to the problem of plastic bag in our
generation. Using environmentally friendly materials in plastic bag substitute like eco bag can help
down the use of plastic bags. In this study, we hope to create an eco bag using banana stem fiber
and use sodium hydroxide to loosen the pseudo-stem and separate its fibers to use this bags in our
community. Even bananas can help replace plastic bags by using their stem fibers.
 The government has now decided to outlaw plastic bags by 2019. In our project, we aim to replace
the carry bag materials with banana fiber. This will support maintaining a clean, and, healthy
atmosphere. By putting our project into practice, we can lessen the use of plastics and keep the
world away from them. Compared to glass fibers, natural fibers offer the best cost savings and low
density. They continue to expand in a variety of applications. A natural fiber is a resource to
synthetic fibers, as reinforcement for polymeric materials for the fabrication is very cheap,
renewable, and, environmental friendly. This paper discusses the creation and testing of an
environmental friendly carry bag made of banana stem-fiber.
BACKGROUND of the STUDY
 One kind of reusable shopping bag is called an eco bag. It serves as a substitute for single use plastic or paper bags. It is
frequently a tote bag made of banana stem fiber. These bags are used to prevent environmental pollution. The materials
utilized to make these bags do not degrade the condition of our environment. These reusable bags are hygienic.
 Eco bags preserve the environment by recycling things that would otherwise be thrown away, also do away with the single
usage of single use plastic bags, which have been shown to be bad for the environment. Plastic bags, which are derived
from petroleum, aid in the extraction of fossil fuels. They also pose a significant disposal issue. Plastic bags take years to
decompose in nature, burning them produces harmful chemicals, and, plastic rubbish in the oceans kills a variety of marine
animals. Non-toxic eco bags, on the other hand, protect the environment because they harmlessly biodegrade after many
uses.
 The Philippines uses about 48 million shopping bags each day, or more than 17 billion annually, according to
phys.org(2019). Although there are programs and initiatives to remove plastic, they are still insufficient to stop this waste.
We develop the concept of eco bags since they are the greatest substitute for plastic bags. The experiment could take days
or weeks to complete. This is due to the fact that numerous test must be performed to demonstrate the value of using
banana stem-fiber as an ingredient when producing Eco bags.
STATEMENT of the PROBLEM
 This study aimed to determine whether Eco bag from banana stem fibers can be
alternative to plastic bags.

1. Why eco bag from banana stem fibers are good for replacing plastic bags?

2. How effective is banana stem fiber in making Eco bags?

3. What is the use of sodium hyroxide in making the bags?

HYPHOTHESIS of the STUDY
 These are the following hypothesis of the study :

H1 : Banana stem fibers work well as a material for eco bags.

H2 : Banana stem fibers are ineffective materials for eco bag production.
SIGNIFICANCE of the STUDY
 The goal of this study was to aid in the solution of the plastic waste issue. This study
seeks to assist those who use plastic bags by recommending eco-friendly alternatives.
This study will help everyone who believes that eco-friendly bags are the greatest
replacement for plastic bags.

DEFINITION of TERMS
 Cellulose - an insoluble substance which is the main constituent of plant cell walls and
of vegetable fibers such as cotton. It is a polysaccharide consisting of chains of
glucose monomers.
 Sodium Hydroxide - a strongly alkaline white deliquescent compound used in many
industrial processes.
 Glass Fibers - a filament of glass. A strong plastic, textile, or other material containing
embedded glass filaments for reinforcement.
 Synthetic - made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product.
OBJECTIVE
 To make bag from banana stem fiber.
