Ready Mix Concrete as an Alternative Construction Material in Building Projects

in Addis Ababa

INTRODUCTION
 Concrete is the most consumable material next to water in the
world.
 Ready Mixed Concrete (RMC) is the concrete which is delivered in
the ready-to-use manner.
 benefits of RMC in terms of quality, speed, life-cycle cost and
environmental friendliness are overwhelmingly superior to those of
site mixed concrete.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

 Better quality concrete is produced.
 Limitation of storage space for basic material at the site
 It can achieve any desired strength of concrete.
 It reduces congestion at the site and prevents Traffic jams
 It is environmentally safe

1.3 Research Questions

 Do contractors prefer site mixed concrete over ready mix concrete? Why?
 Does ready mix concrete produced in Addis Ababa has better quality (in terms of
strength and work ability) than concrete produced at construction sites of the city?

1.4.1 General Objective

 To assess practice of ready mix concrete in Addis Ababa-Ethiopia.
1.4.2 Specific Objectives
 To assess the current practice of ready mix concrete
 To compare ready mix concrete to the current trade Site Mixed
concrete in Addis Ababa
 To assess that ready-mix batching plants produce the desired
amount needed by the construction projects in Addis Ababa.

1.5 Significance of the Study

 Analyse Cost comparison of ready mix concrete with Site Mixed concrete.
 this kind of research will be a better input for Ethiopian concrete
technology.
 contractors and clients benefits from the study.
1.6 Scope of the Study
 For Concreting in congested area where storage of materials is not
possible.
 Sites where intensity of traffic makes problems

1.7 Limitation of the study

 Requires huge initial investment.
 Not suitable for small projects(less quantity of concrete is required).
 Need an effective transportation system from the batching plant to
the job site

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Comparison Factors On-Site Mixed Concrete / Ready Mix Concrete

Conventional

Quality Inconsistent Consistent better quality

Time required Time consuming Reduced

Construction Cost Reduced Costly

Wastage More wastage Minimized Wastage

Ease of construction Not easy Easy

Production capacity In small capacity It can serve wide areas

Storage space on construction site It needs storage area It does not need
Dust and Noise pollution on site High disturbance Reduced
