BURNING PROCESS OF RHA
• When rice husk is burnt 20% rice-husk ash is generated.
• On burning , cellulose and lignin are removed leaving behind silica
ash.
• The controlled temperature and environment of burning yields better
quality of rice-husk ash.
METHODOLOGY
MIX DESIGN AS PER IS METHOD

IS : 10262 – 2009 present the guidelines for the design of concrete mix. The
second revision i.e., IS: 10262-2019 “CONCRETE MIX
PROPORTIONING-GUIDELINES” confirms the design of high strength
concrete.
METHODS OF CONCRETE MIX DESIGN :
• INDIAN STANDARD RECOMMENDED METHOD IS 10262-2019
• ACI COMMITTEE 211 METHOD
• FINENESS MODULUS METHOD
• MAXIMUM DENSITY METHOD
• SURFACE AREA METHOD
REQUIRED DATA:
o Grade designation : M25
o Type of cement specific grade of cement : OPC 53 grade
o maximum nominal size of aggregate : 16-20mm
o exposure condition : moderate [IS 456,Table-3]
o minimum cement content:300 kg/m³
o workability in terms of slump – 100mm[IS 456-CL7.1]
o Transportation time-30min
o standard deviation-4 N/mm²
o type of aggregate-crushed angular aggregate
o maximum cement content – 450 N/mm³ [IS 456:CL 8.2.42]
o Water cement ratio-0.5[IS 456:Table 5]
o fine aggregate - zone‖
Target mean strength:
o f’ck=fck+1.65S (or) fck+X (which ever is higher) [from IS 10262-2019 4.2]
o f’ck=25+1.65*4=31.6 N/mm² [IS 10262-2019 Table2]
o f’ck=25+5.5=30.5 N/mm²
consider higher of both=31.6 N/mm² as target mean strength @28 days
Water cement ratio:
exposure – moderate[IS 456-2000;Table 3&5,pg no:20]
o mix cement content=300kg/m³
o max water cement ratio=0.5
o adopt water cement ratio=0.45
0.45<0.5 Hence ok
Water content:
[IS 10262;Table 4,pg no:5]
o aggregate 20mm – 186kg/m³ for 50mm slump
o for every 25mm slump water content increases/decreases by 3%
o slump is 100 mm – 50+25+25 =2*3=6%
o increase water content 6%
186+6% extra *186
186+0.06*186=197.16 kg or lit
• Cement content:
o water cement ratio=water content/cement content
o cement content= water content/water cement ratio (water content=197.16kg)
o cement content=197/0.5=394 kg min cement content=300kg
Hence ok, max cement content=450kg
• Aggregates proportion b/w CA & FA:
[IS 10262,Table 5,Cl 5.5.1]
coarse aggregate-20mm Fine aggregate=0.62 (zone‖)
zone ‖ - 0.62 (w/c=0.45)
volume of coarse aggregate=0.62
volume of fine aggregate=0.38
• Mix calculation per unit volume of concrete:
o volume of concrete=1 m³
o volume of cement=mass of cement/mass density of cement
=438.13/3.15*100=0.139m³
o Volume of water content=mass of water/density of water=197.16/1000=0.197m³
o volume of all in aggregate=1-0.139-0.197=0.664 m³
o Mass of coarse aggregate =vol of coarse aggregate*vol of all aggregate*sp gravity of coarse
aggregate*1000
= 0.678*0.62*2.72*1000
= 1143.38 kg/m³
o Mass of fine aggregate =vol of all aggregate*vol of fine aggregate*sp gravity of fine aggregate*1000
= 0.678*0.382*2.45*1000
= 631.22kg/m³
SUMMARY :
 cement=395kg
 water=197kg/m³ or lit/m³
 mass of fine aggregate=631.22kg/m³
 mass of coarse aggregate=1143.38kg/m³

CASTING OF SPECIMENS
• Specimens for Compressive Strength 150x150x150 mm sized cube
specimens were prepared for compressive strength.
• The materials required were weighed according to the mix proportion.
• Cement, fly ash, fine aggregates and coarse aggregates were dry mixed
first to have a uniform colour.
• After that 50% of the total water required was added to the mix to have
thorough mixing for 3- 4 minutes.
• Then 40% of the water was added with addition to the mix.
• Remaining 10% of water was sprinkled on the above mix and it was
thoroughly mixed in the mixer.

HARDENED CONCRETE TEST
(a) COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST
• Specimens were demoulded after 24 hours of casting. Then they were poured in curing
tank for the predefined time. At the age of testing, specimens were taken out of the tank
and allowed surface drying for 10-15 minutes.
• Specimens were tested in Compression Testing Machine (CTM) at the load rate of 5
kN/sec specified as per IS: 516-1959. CTM has the capacity of 3000kN. The failure
load was then evaluated.

(b) SPLIT TENSILE STRENGTH TEST

• Splitting tensile strength is Generally greater than the direct tensile strength and
lower than the flexural strength.
• The max load sustained by the specimen is divided by appropriate geometrical
factors to obtain the splitting tensile strength.
