Riesling
Riesling is a cold-hardy white grape variety that
prefers cool to moderate climates. With its
natural high acidity and susceptibility to
botrytis/noble rot, it is suitable for the
production of outstanding-quality wines at all
sweetness levels. Today Riesling is produced
across the world in a variety of styles.

CHATECTERISTICS OF RIESLING
Riesling is a aromatic grape variety that
produces wines with a pronounced fruity and
floral aromas and high acidity.
The specific fruit flavor in the wine vary
according to the level of ripeness in the
grapes at the time of the harvest. Grapes that
are just ripe produce wines with flavors of
green fruit(apple, pear) and citrus(lemon,
lime). Extra-ripe grapes gives flavors of stone
fruit(peach, apricot),tropical fruit(mango,
pineapple) and sometimes dried fruit(dried
apricot, raisins). Styles of Riesling range
from dry to sweet and light to full body. As a
variety that retains acidity and builds up
sugar and flavor slowly. Riesling is suitable
for late harvesting in regions where there are
dry, sunny autumn conditions. A grape's
sugars, acidity and flavors can be
concentrated by late harvesting, though the
effect of botrytis or as a result of grape
freezing on the vine. Riesling's high natural
acidity is perfect for balancing high level of
sweetness.

WINEMAKING AND MATURATION


OPTIONS

Riesling produces dry, off-dry, medium and sweet


white wines. Off-dry or medium styles are usually
made by interrupting the fermentation by removing
the yeast, which leaves a wine with lower alcohol and
some residual sugar, or by the addition of sterile
grape juice (süssreserve). The sweetest styles are
made using extra-ripe grapes; the grape juice is so
high In sugar that the fermentation stops naturally.
Winemakers typically ferment Riesling in inert
vessels such as stainless steel tanks to preserve its
floral aromas. The finest Riesling wines can age for
years even decades in the bottle. High natural acidity
preserves the freshness of the wine while it develops
complex tertiary flavors of honey and petrol.

Mosel 
IMPORTANT REGIONS FOR Due to the Mosel's northerly latitude, Rieslings
RIESLING from this area are typically lighter in body. They
commonly have medium sweetness to balance
GERMANY the very high acidity.
Germany has a performantly cool
climate, with some vineyards lying above the
50° of latitude north of the equator. Riesling is
the most important grape variety here and
is widely planted throughout the
countries wine regions.

Rheingau Phalz
The vineyards of Rheingau region Towards the French border, the Phalz region
are situated on steep, south facing slopes on is protected by mountains to the west and
the north bank of the River Rhine. These has dry sunny climate with long growing
wines are typically drier in style than Mosel season. Climatically it can
and have more body. be considered an extension of Frances
Alsace region and the wines are similar in
style. A typical Pfalz is dry and medium
bodied.

FRANCE
The French region of Alsace Aoc lies to the east of the
Vosges Mountains, which protects the vineyards from
rain-bearing westerly winds. It is therefore one of the
driest and sunniest wine-producing regions in all of
France. The best vineyards are planted in the mountain
foothills facing east or south-east to benefit from the
morning sun. Long periods of uninterrupted sunshine
extend the growing season long into autumn, allowing
the grapes to ripen slowly and gradually. 
A typical Alsace Riesling is dry with pronounced
aroma and flavor intensity. The wines have ripe citrus
and stone fruit flavors and vibrant blossom aromas.
They are medium-bodied with high acidity. The best
wines come from individual vineyards called Grand
Cru's. They can age for decades in the bottle,
developing tertiary flavors of honey and dried fruit 
Sweeter styles are also , made from late-harvested
grapes. These wines are labelled Verdanges tarvdives.
