INTRODUCTION & IT’S
IMPORTANCE OF
ENGINEERING DRAWING
AND
DRAWING INSTRUMENTS
• IMPORTANCE OF ENGINEERING DRAWING :-
The economical success of any country is mainly depended it’s industrial development.
Due to the globalisation product of any industry of our country expected to Be of global market
standard. Duo to the above said reason our Indian product required to be of very high quality with
respect to size dimension, fit, finish etc.
To produce a best standard product all the technical personnel (Engineers to Craftsmen) in
an industry must have a sound knowledge in engineering drawing is a language of engineers.
Engineering drawing is an universal language with different types of lines are its alphabets. Technical
personnel in any industry including craftsmen are expected to communicate anything concerning a part
or a component by drawings involving lines, symbols, abbreviations etc.
With our spoken languages it is impossible to express the details of a job or a product.
Engineering drawing knowledge and practice are must for designing or producing a component or part.
Even a small mistake in the drawing may reflect very badly in the product. Therefore reading and doing
engineering drawing are very much essential for craftsmen and engineers.
ENGINEERING DRAWING
INSTRUMENTS
1. DRAWING BOARD :-
• Drawing board is one Equipment of
draftsmen. It is used for supporting the drawing
paper/tracking paper for marking drawing.
• One of the shorter edges of the drawing board, is
provided with an “ebony edge” (hard wood) fitted
perfectly straight, on which the stock of the ‘T‘
square slides.
• Standard drawing boards are designated as follows
as per IS:1444-1989
2. ‘T’ SQUARE :-
• It is of ‘T’ shape, made well seasoned wood.
• It has two parts, head and blade. One of the edge of
the blade is working edge. The blade is screwed to
his head such that the working edge is at right angle
to head.
• T square guide to the set square and stencil.
• The standard ‘T’ squares are designated as follows
with dimensions show in mmm. As per IS : 1360-
1989
Sr. No. Designation Blade length
1 T0 1500
2 T1 1000
3 T2 700
4 T3 500
3. Pencils:-
• in drawing section, standard pencils ( lead
encased in wood ) and semi-automatic
pencils are made use of. Pencil leads are
made of graphite with clay.
• Pencils are graded according to the
hardness or softness of the lead.
• Hardest pencil is 9H graded and softness
pencil is 7B grade.
• H medium hard
• HB medium soft
• 2H hard
• 4. SET SQUARES:-
• (IS: 1361-1988) Transparent celluloid/
plastic setsquares are proffered. They are
two in number, each having one corner
with 90°. The set squares with 60°-30° of
25 cm long and 45° of 20 cm long is
convenient for use.
• With the help of ‘T’ square and manipolting
45°, 30°, 60° setsquares, angular lines in
the multiples of 15° can be drawn.
• Parallel lines and perpendicular lines to a
given inclined line can also be drawn using
setsquares and ‘T’ square.
• 5. SCALE :-
• Scales are used to transfer and or to
measure the dimensions. They are made of
wood, steel, ivory, celluloid or plastic.
Stainless steel scales are more durable.
They are either flat, bevel edged or
triangular cross section.
• Scale of 15 cm long, 2 cm wide or 30 cm
long 3.5 cm wide flate scales are preferred
over thick flat scale.
• Parallel error will be nil or least while using
thin/tapered edge scales.
• 6. Compass & Divider:-
• It is used to measure and distribute the line
in the same area.
• It is also used for draw circles and Mark
chord.
• Compass is used for draw big circle.
• Divider is used for draw small Circle and
also Mark on circle as same measurements.
• 7. Drafter :-
• Drafter is a combination of T square, set
square, scale, protector.
• It is fitted by fixing clamp on drawing
board at left side upper part.
• Draw parallel, horizontal, vertical,
inclined lines and o° to 360° angles.
• By using drafter save time.
• 8. PROTECTOR:-
• Protector is circle or semi circle
• It is made from plastic material.
• Protector is used for draw angles and
measure angles.
• O° to 180° available in semi circle
protector.
• 0° to 360° available in circle protector.
