    CLASS OBJECTIVES

    Define simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence

    Classify sentences as simple, compound, complex and compound-


    complex.

    Identify independent and subordinate clauses within sentences.

    Write simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex sentences.


    INTRODUCTION
    Sentences may be classified according to their purpose as declarative,
    imperative, interrogative, or exclamatory.

    Sentences may also be classified according to their structure.

    The term structure refers to the number and types of clauses in a sentence.

    Depending on its structure a sentence can be classified as as simple,


    compound, complex, or compound-complex.
    SIMPLE SENTENCE

    A simple sentence contains one independent clause and no


    subordinate clauses.

    It may have a compound subject, a compound verb, and any


    number of phrases.

    COMPOUND SENTENCE
    A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses and no
    subordinate clause.

    The independent clauses in a compound sentence may be joined by:


    A comma and a coordinating conjunction.
    A semicolon
    A semicolon, conjunctive adverb and a comma.

    A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at

    Remember there are three different typs of subordinate clauses:


    Adjective clause
    Adverb clause
    Noun clause
