CONCURRENT AND NON-CONCURRENT FORCES

Concurrent forces
-are two or more forces whose lines of action intersect at
the same point to cause rotation. The forces do not
necessarily have to be applied.

Non-concurrent Forces
-It is defined as the forces which lies in the line of
action but do not intersect or forms a parallel at a
common point.
Concurrent forces

Non-Concurrent
forces

Concurrent forces
A couple is an example of a non-concurrent force because its line of action does not intersect
at one point.
Couple
– a pair of equal parallel forces oppositely directed separated by a perpendicular distance.
The magnitude of the couple is equal to the product of the force and the perpendicular
distance.

C =Fd

The moment sum is constant and independent of the

moment center.
Proof:
Mo = F(d+a) –Fa
Mo = Fd
Problems
Determine the resultant moment about point A of the system of forces shown in Figure below.
Each square is 1 ft on a side.

The three step pulley shown if figure is subjected to the given Couples. Compute the
value of the resultant couple and determine the forces acting at the rim of the middle
pulley that are required to balance the given system.

Force at the rim of the middle Pulley that will balance the given
system

F(12) = 760
F = 63.33 lb
The cantilever truss shown carries a vertical load of 2400 lb. The truss is supported by bearings at A
and B which exert the forces Av,Ah and Bh. The four forces shown constitute two couples which must
have opposite moment effects to prevent movement of the truss. Determine the magnitude of the
supporting forces.

SOLUTION

Bh and Ah constitute A clockwise couple that rotates

Clockwise. To prevent movement of the truss Av and
2400 lb must be a couple rotating counterclockwise.

If Av and 2400 lb is a couple then Av = 2400 lb up

Couple produced by Av and 2400 C =2400(6)

Couple produce by Bh and Ah C = Ah(4)
2400(6) =Ah(4)
Ah = 3600 lb to the left
Bh =3600 lb to the right
