     Mental disorders defined by
    abnormal eating behaviors

     Causes of eating disorders


    are not clear – biological
    and environmental factors
     Treatment varies by disorder
    – mainly counseling, dietary
    advice or medications
    Types of Eating Disorders
    Anorexia nervosa

     Characterized by abnormally low body weight and


    distorted perception of weight
     Fear of weight gain – different means of losing
    weight
     Main symptom is extreme weight loss
     More common in women
     Anorexia can be fatal – imbalance of minerals in your
    body, kidney problems
    Bulimia nervosa

     Characterized by binge-eating large amounts of food


    and then urge of trying to get rid of calories in an
    unhealthy way – vomiting, laxatives

     Bulimia may cause heart problems, digestive problems


    or severe gum diseases
    Binge Eating Disorder

     Eating very large quantities of food


     More common than other eating disorders
     Unlike people with bulimia, they don’t usually
    follow this by getting rid of the food in an unhealthy
    way
     Binge eating disorder cause mainly extreme weight
    gain
    Pica

     Name comes from Latin word for magpie


     Eating of things that are not food – wood, chalk,
    metal, glass, etc.

     Can cause intoxication and surgical emergencies


     Commonly seen in pregnant women, small children
    and people with autism

     Main form of treatment for pica is therapy


    Avoidant/restrictive food
    intake disorder (ARFID)
     Eating disorder in which people eat only within an
    extreme narrow repertoire of foods
     Patients are extremely picky eaters
     Limited variety of preferred foods based on brand,
    texture, taste
     It may cause nutritional deficiencies or other negative
    health outcomes
    Orthorexia

     Unhealthy obsession with eating “pure” food


     Food considered “pure” vary from person to person
     People feel guilty if they eat food they consider
    unhealthy
    Night Eating Syndrome

     Occurs along frequent sleep interruptions


     Patients wake up during the night to eat
     NES increases the risk of health problems like
    diabetes and high blood pressure
     About 1 in 100 people have NES
    Vampirism

     Commonly known as Renfield's syndrome


     Subtype of Pica
     It causes an irresistible thirst for blood

     Has 3 phases:
    1. Drinking your own blood
    2. Drinking blood of smaller animals
    3. Drinking other people's blood
