Active Passive

This document provides instruction on active and passive voice. It defines active voice as having the subject-verb-object pattern where the subject performs the action. Passive voice has the object-verb-subject pattern where the subject receives the action. Examples are given of changing sentences between active and passive voice. Later, students are asked to identify if sentences are active or passive voice, change between the two voices, and write a description using both.

Active voice
and
Passive voice
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the learners are able to;
• Differentiate active and passive
voice.
• Use the passive and active voice
meaningfully in varied context.
• Rewrite sentences from active to
passive, passive to active.
ACTIVE OR PASSIVE?

• 2.The priest read a prayer aloud.

• 4.The book was read aloud by patricia.
• 5.The girl answers the call.
WHAT IS ACTIVE VOICE?

SUBJECT-VERB-OBJECT is the
pattern of active voice. In the active
voice, the subject is the doer of the
action. This is where the doer/subject is
given more focus than the action itself.
EXAMPLES
1. Roel painted the entire house.

2. Ana reads the letter.

3. I will clean the room every

Wednesday.
• roel (subject) is the doer of the action
painted (verb), and house (object) is the
receiver of the action.

• Take note that the verb is in the past tense

as the subject is already done doing
action.

• - Ana is the subject.

• - Reads is the verb.
• - Letter is the receiver or object
• The subject is I , the one who perform
the action. will clean is the verb. The
room the one who receive the action.
• the verb here is future tense of verb
because it has will, which mean the action
is not yet done.

• Remember that when the subject does or

‘acts upon’ the verb the sentence is said
to be in active voice.
What is passive voice?

• The pattern of passive voice is

OBJECT-VERB-SUBJECT.
The subject receives the
action of the verb, the
sentence is said to be passive
voice.
Examples
• The entire house was painted by
Roel.

• The letter is read by Ana.

• Every Wednesday the room will

be cleaned by me.
• house is the object, the verb is painted
and the subject is roel.
• . Notice, that the object comes first before
the verb and subject.
• Letter is the object, verb is read and
subject is ana.
• Remember, that the passive voice is
used when the object is more important
than the doer of the action or the subject.
• The object here is room, the verb will
be cleaned and the subject is me.
Change Active Voice to Passive Voice
and Passive Voice to Active Voice.
• ACTIVE-PASSIVE
• In changing to passive, remember
the pattern of passive voice.
Object-verb-subject. And the form
of verb will change also by adding
was, were, are, and is depending
on the verb used in the active
voice.
Example

• 1. The priest read the prayer

aloud.

• 2. The girl answers the call

• 1. The priest read the prayer aloud.

If we will transform it to passive it will

become. The prayer was read aloud by the
priest.

• 2. The girl answers the call.

If we will transform it will become. The call

was answered by the girl.
PASSIVE- ACTIVE

• To change passive into active,

make the subject of the
passive verb the object of the
active verb. The person or
thing performing the action then
becomes the subject of the
new sentence.
Example

• 1. A poem is written by him.

• 2. The book was read aloud by

Dianne.
