Food insecurity: a major
problem
845,000,000
No. of people estimated worldwide to be
undernourished
Food insecurity in India

● The USDA defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access

to enough food for every person in a household to live an active,
healthy life. This can be a temporary situation for a family or can
last a long time. Food insecurity is one way we measure how
many people can't afford food.

● According to UNO -India, there are nearly 195 million

undernourished people in India, which is a quarter of the world's
hunger burden. Also, roughly 43% of children in India are
chronically undernourished. India ranks 68 out of 113 major
countries in terms of food security index 2022.
Challenges faced by food insecurity

1 Growing population 3 Unmonitored nutrition program

Pest
2 Climate change 4 and ......diseases
Population – Although a major part of the Indian population is engaged in agricultural activities, the
availability of food for all is a challenge due to the increasing population of the country
Climatic Change – Farming and agricultural activities have been severely affected by climatic change
over the past few years. Some regions face floods while some experience drought. Similar changes
have severely affected livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture
Unmonitored nutrition programmes – Emphasis must be given on introducing and enacting well-
monitored nutrition programmes
Inadequate storage facilities – Inadequate and improper storage facilities for grains, which are often
stored outside under tarps that provide little protection from humidity and pests
Sustainable agriculture
What do you mean by sustainable agriculture ?
Sustainable agriculture is a method of farming that focuses on practices that are environmentally, economically, and
socially responsible, with the goal of producing food in a way that meets the needs of the present generation without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable agriculture aims to minimize
negative impacts on the environment, protect natural resources, promote biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of
farmers and rural communities.

Key principles of sustainable agriculture include:

1. Conservation and management of resources

2. Biodiversity
3. Social responsibility
4. Resilience and adaptability
Scientific innovation for
sustainable agriculture
Scientific Innovations

1. Precision agriculture 3. Vertical farming

2. Genetic engineering 4. Biotechnology

What is Precision Agriculture?
• Precision agriculture (PA) is a farming management concept based on observing,
measuring and responding to inter- and intra-field variability in crops. PA is also sometimes
referred to as precision farming, satellite agriculture, as-needed farming and site-specific
crop management (SSCM).

Precision agriculture uses information technology (IT) to ensure that crops and soil receive
exactly what they need for optimum health and productivity. This also ensures profitability,
sustainability and protection of the environment. It considers aspects such as soil type,
terrain, weather, plant growth and yield data when managing crops.
What is Genetic Engineering?
It is a technology that involves inserting DNA into the genome of an organism. To
produce a GM plant, new DNA is transferred into plant cells. Usually, the cells are
then grown in tissue culture where they develop into plants. The seeds produced by
these plants will inherit the new DNA.

Genetic modification of plants involves adding a specific stretch of DNA into the
plant’s genome, giving it new or different characteristics. This could include
changing the way the plant grows, or making it resistant to a particular disease. The
new DNA becomes part of the GM plant’s genome which the seeds produced by
these plants will contain.
What is Vertical Farming?
• Vertical farming is exactly what it sounds like: farming on vertical surfaces, rather than
traditional, horizontal agriculture. By using vertically stacked layers, farmers can produce
much more food on the same amount of land (or even less).Often these layers are integrated
into buildings such as skyscrapers, housed in warehouses or shipping containers, greenhouses
(like ours), or placed in spaces that would otherwise be unfit for farming.

The Benefits of Vertical Farming

1. Utilize Less Water & Space
2. Increased Production All Year
3. Reduced Arable Land
What does Robotics and automation contribute in
Agriculture?
● Agriculture is quickly becoming an exciting high-tech industry, drawing new
professionals, new companies and new investors. The technology is developing
rapidly, not only advancing the production capabilities of farmers but also
advancing robotics and automation technology as we know it.
● At the heart of this phenomenon is the need for significantly increased production
yields. The UN estimates the world population will rise from 7.3 billion today to 9.7
billion in 2050. The world will need a lot more food, and farmers will face serious
pressure to keep up with demand.

● Agricultural robots are increasing production yields for farmers in various ways.
From drones to autonomous tractors to robotic arms, the technology is being
deployed in creative and innovative applications.
