Week 1 Lesson For 4TH Q.
Week 1 Lesson For 4TH Q.
Week 1 Lesson For 4TH Q.
(Quartiles)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
1)illustrate quartiles;
2)determine the formulas for quartiles for ungrouped
and grouped data;
3)use formulas to calculate the specified quartile
position for ungrouped and grouped data; and
4)interpret quartile results.
Before we start this module, let us review the concept of median which
is needed in the study of this module.
Activity 1: Locate your position…
median 𝑥+𝑦
2

What’s New
There are instances that you want not only the point
that divides the distribution into two equal parts.
Sometimes you want to find the value in the distribution
which separates the highest 75% from the lowest 25%,
or the value below which lie 40% of the distribution.
In order for you to do this, you need the three
measures of position, namely quartiles, deciles and
percentiles. This part of module enables you to
understand quartiles in a set of data.
= 25%
= 50%
= 75%

Example 2. The following are the scores of ten
students in their 40- item quiz. Find the first and third
quartile.
34 23 15 27 36 21 20 13 33 25
In ascending order:
13 15 20 21 23 25 27 33 34 36
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th
13 15 20 21 23 25 27 33 34 36
Step of Interpolation:
= a.) First quartile is located in
between 15 and 20 , subtract the 2nd
= data from 3rd data.
= 20 – 15 = 5
b.) Multiply the result by the decimal
= part(0.75).
= 2.75 5(0.75) = 3.75
c.) Add the result to the smallest data
Since the result is a decimal which is the 2nd data.
number, we need to apply the 15 + 3.75 = 18.75
interpolation.
Therefore, the value of = 18.75

a.) 34 – 33 = 1

= b.) 1(0.25) = 0.25
= c.) 33 + 0.25 = 33.25
= 8.25
Since the result is a decimal Therefore, the value of = 33.25
number, we need to apply the
interpolation.
PRACTICE EXERCISES
