Bohr’s Planetary Model of the Atom
Neils Bohr (1885-1962) develop one of the first models of atom
called planetary model.

● Atom consist of a small and dense nucleus surrounded by

electrons traveling in circular orbits.

● Each orbit was assigned a certain energy value, so they were

called energy levels or
energy shell. This energy value is related to the electrons
motion around the nucleus , and described to be fixed or
quantized

● The electron in the orbit closest to the nucleus were at the

lowest possible energy level called the ground state or
ground level. The energy level above the ground states are
called excited states or excited level.
Quantum Mechanical Model of the Atom
Erwin Schrodinger (1887-1961) develop an equation which
described the behavior, as well as the energies, of particles.

● The equation in quantum mechanics indicate how the

probability of finding an electron at a particular place within
the atom, changes from place to place.

● Regions with many points represent a high probability of

finding an electron, while regions with fewer points indicate
low probability.

● The resulting model is often called charge cloud or

quantum-mechanical model.
Quantum Numbers

● Principal energy level can have positive nonzero integer as

value, such as 1,2,3 and so on.

● Principal energy level is represented by letter n.

● Each principal energy level (n) is divided into one or more

sublevels. The number of sublevels corresponds to the
number of principal energy level.
Quantum Numbers

● Remember that atomic orbital is represented by its principal

energy level (n) and a letters (s, p, d, f…)designates the
sublevels.

● To determine the total number of atomic orbitals for a

particular principal energy level (n), the formula n2 may be
used.

● To determine the maximum number of electrons that can

occupy the a principal energy level, the formula 2n2 may
be used.

ELECTRON CONFIGURATION

● The distribution of Electrons among

the orbitals of an atom is called the
atom’s electron configuration .

● This is represented by a number, a

letter and a superscript.
