SECTOR
UPSTREAM
The Upstream sector is one of the three major streams of the oil
& gas industry. It mainly includes exploration, drilling, and
exploitation operations.
Upstream Activity
Throughout a life of a well, several operations are conducted,
heavy equipment are used and maintained and a large number of
different types of wastes are generated, this results in a
considerable amount of GHG emissions.

way for upstream oil and gas companies to reduce Scope 1 Fugitive emissions in the oil and gas
emissions industry refer to unintended leaks of
greenhouse gases, and other hazardous air
pollutants from equipment and infrastructure
used in oil and gas operations.
Each year, gas flaring, the burning of natural In the oil and gas industry, CCUS can be used
gas associated with oil extraction, emits to capture CO2 emissions from various
more than 400 million tons of CO2 processes, including natural gas processing
equivalent emissions and refining.

❖ Once a leak is identified, repairs should be prioritized based on the severity of the
leak and the potential environmental impact.
Reducing Flaring
Flaring is divided into two types:
● Routine flaring
● Non-routine flaring

replacing older valves and less energy efficient pumps and compressors and
implementing energy-saving measures such as insulation and weatherization.

sector is a significant contributor to CO2 emissions, mainly
through Refinery heat, Hydrogen production and many more….

Conclusion
In conclusion, our project presentation highlighted several strategies
to reduce CO2 emissions in the energy industry. We also presented
additional strategies that could be helpful. While some of them may
take time, they are crucial for creating a sustainable future. By
working together and utilizing the best technology and resources,
we can achieve a cleaner energy system.
