The document outlines the basic elements of art including line, shape, texture, color, space, and form. It provides examples and definitions for each element, such as describing line as a path that creates movement and shape as either geometric or organic. The elements of art are the foundational tools and concepts that artists use to compose and create works of visual art.

They may be horizontal, vertical, diagonal or curve lines. Diagonal lines Diagonal line suggest action, life and movement. They give animation to any composition in which they appear. Almost every object in action assume diagonal line. A running person makes a diagonal line with his body and legs. The degree of action is shown by the angle of the diagonal. COLOR Has the most aesthetic appeal of all the elements of visual arts. Delight in color is a universal human characteristics Is a property of light The light of the sun contains all the colors of the spectrum: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. colors and their implications o RED – romantic love and passion, symbolizes courage, beauty, respect, admiration oPINK – feminine elegance, class and refinement olight – express sympathy, grace and gentility odeep – warmth and gratitude o WHITE – exudes truth, reverence, unconditional love, pure intentions oYELLOW – care and friendship, joy, a caring spirit, warmth and appreciation o ORANGE – desire and enthusiasm o PURPLE odeep – regal, royal vibe o medium toned – desire, respect and love at first sight o light – gentler, more spiritual connotation ANALOGOUS/ADJACENT – USES THREE OR MORE COLORS THAT SIT NEXT TO ONE ANOTHER ON THE COLOR WHEEL Complementary – uses colors opposite of each other in the color wheel Split complementary – uses one root color plus the two colors that are on either side of the root colors complement Triadic/Triad - uses three colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel Tetrad(rectangular) – uses 2 base hues which are 1 color apart and their complements. Other color harmonies Analogous complementary – uses 3 analogous colors, plus the complement of the middle analogous color. Square – uses four colors evenly spaced around the color wheel TEXTURE During the 19th to 20th centuries, a higher premium was placed on very smooth surfaces and forms. A group of painters including Cezzane, Picasso and others emphasized texture by purposely making portions of the painting rough. Texture is being used by sculptors, architecture, paintings and any other forms of art. SPACE Refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. SHAPE is a flat, two dimensional area with height and width. It can be: ◦ geometric shapes ◦ organic shapes Geometric Shapes Were originally formed mechanically using a ruler or compass. However today, even the most complex geometric forms can be easily created using digital imaging software. In art they tend to be used to convey the idea of rigidity, structure, pattern, perspective and 3 dimensional form. Organic shapes Are usually natural, irregular and freeform in character. They are associated with anatomical forms such as heart and kidney shapes. Organic shapes can convey a sense of formation and development, and suggest qualities such as softness, sensuality, flexibility and fluidity. FORM Applies to the over-all design of a work of art. Form consists of size and volume. Includes height, width and depth. Form generally refers to sculpture, 3D design and architecture but may also relate to the illusion of 3D on a 2D surface. Good architecture allows outward forms to be governed by what goes on inside. Form may be created by the forming of two or more shapes or as three-dimensional shape. It may be enhanced by tone, texture and color. ACTIVITY 5 Create form in a 2d surface. Show texture in a 2d surface.
