who am i in the cyberworld?(digital self)


more people are becoming active in using the internet for
research , pleasure,business,communication, and other
purposes.internet is of great for everyone . people assume
differrent identities while in the cyberspace. people act
differently when they are online and offline. we have our
real identity and online identity.
online identity
is actually the sum of our characteristics and our
interaction.
1. open identity
2. avoidance identity
3. audience identity
4. content identity
5. compartmentalization identity
partial identity
is subset of characteristics that make up our identity.
persona
is the partial identity we create that represents
ourselves in a specific situation.
selective Self-representation and impression Management:
self- presentation
goffin (1959) and leary(1995) -the process of
controlling how one is percieved by other people and
is the key to relationship inception anad
development.anything posted online should be
considered “public” no matter what our “privacy”
stings are.

personal identity
is the interpersonal level of self which differentiates
the individual as unique from membership.
GENDER AND SEXUALITY ONLINE
• According to Marwick (2013) while the terms “sex’’ , “gender” and “sexuality”
are often thought of as synonymous, they are actually quiet distinct.

sex is the biological state that corresponds to what we might call a “man” and
woman”.

gender is the social understanding of hw sex should be experienced and how


sex manifests in behavior,personality,preferences and capabilities.

sexuality is an individual expression and understanding of desire.this is often


viewed as binary,in reality,sexuality is often experienced as fluid.
Setting boundaries to your online Self: Smart sharing:
Before posting and sharing anything online consider
the following:
1. is this post/story necessary?
2. is there a real benefit to this post?is it funny,warm-
hearted,teachable - or am i just making noise online without
purpose?
3. have we (as a family or parent/child)resolved this issue? as issue
that is still being worked out at home, or one that is either
vulnerable or highly emotional, should not be made public.
4. it is approptiate?does it stay within the boundaries of our family
values?
5. will this seem as funny in 5, 10, or 15 years ?or is this post better
suited for sharing with a small group of family members?or maybe

according to new(2014):
1. stick to safer sites.
2. guard your passwords.
3. limit what you share.
4. remember that anything you put online or post on a site is
there forever, even if you try to delete it.
5. do not be mean or embarass other people online.
6. always tell if you see strange or behavior online.
7. be choosy about your online friends.
8. be patient.
