INTRODUCTI
ON
• Titanium Dioxide also called Titania, is a white, opaque,
naturally occurring mineral existing in a number of
crystalline forms,
• The most important of which are rutile and anatase.
• These naturally occurring oxide forms can be mined
and serve as a source for commercial titanium.
• Titanium dioxide is used universally in the paints and
coatings industry, and it has replaced any other white
pigment in the market.
• Titanium dioxide can be used in wastewater remediation.
OBJECTIVE
• To design an effective process for the production of titanium dioxide
• To evaluate the material and energy balances for the processes
• To perform the calculations for the design of process equipments for the
production of titanium dioxide
• To compare the datas with the software ASPEN HYSYS
• To develop the plant layout
SOURCE
RAW MATERIALS
• TiO2
• Chlorine TiO2 mineral in rutile form
• Coke
• Oxygen
CHLORIDE PROCESS
The chloride process is used to separate titanium from its ores. The
goal of the process is to win high purity titanium dioxide from ores such
as ilmenite (FeTiO3) and rutile (TiO2). The strategy exploits the volatility of
TiCl4, which is readily purified and converted to the dioxide.
SULPHATE PROCESS
Production Reactions:
The reactions involved in the manufacture of titanium
dioxide are,
2TiO2 + 4Cl2 + 3C 2TiCl4 + CO2 + 2CO
(Impure)
TiCl4 + O2 TiO2 + 2Cl2
(Pure)
