    Fundamentals of lightning
    protection
    WHAT IS LIGHTNING

    Lightning is an electrical discharge caused by imbalances between storm clouds and the


    ground, or within the clouds themselves. Most lightning occurs within the clouds. It cause to
    produce heat and this heat causes surrounding air to rapidly expand and vibrate , which
    create the pealing thunder and we hear a short time after seeing a lightning flash.
    1. Intra-cloud lightning

    Intra-cloud lightning is an electrical discharge between oppositely charged


    areas within the thunderstorm cloud
    Cloud-to-cloud lightning is the discharge between areas of cloud without the discharge channel
    reaching the ground.
    A cloud to ground lightning strike begins as an invisible channel of electrically charged air moving
    from the cloud toward the ground. When one channel nears an object on the ground, a powerful
    surge of electricity from the ground moves upward to the clouds and produces the visible lightning
    strike.
    LIGHTNING PROTECTION

    A lightning strike can average 300 millions volts of electricity

    Lightning has current up to 30,000 amperes current.

    A lightning protection system is designed to protect a structure from damage due


    to intensely high voltage current of lightning strike by intercepting such strikes
    and safely passing their extremely high voltage current to ‘ground’.
    COMPONENT OF LIGHTNING PROTECTION

    BONDING CONDUCTORS(down conductors)
