Definition of Terms
Earthquake
The shaking or trembling of the earth caused by movement
along a fault.
Earthquakes occur when rock shifts or slips along fault lines.
Earthquakes generate waves that travel through the earths
surface.
These waves are what is felt and cause damage around the
epicenter of the earthquake.
Fault
Faults are thin zones of crushed blocks of rocks.
These are often in centimeters to thousands of kilometers long
Faults are blocks of the earth’s crust that meet.
Scientists identify four types of faults, characterized by the position of
the fault plane, the break in the rock and the movement of the two rock
blocks.
Faults lines are under enormous pressure from the two pieces of the
earth’s crust pushing together.
3 TYPES OF FAULTS
rocks are sliding past each other
1.Strike-slip fault horizontally.

two blocks of crust layer, pulling

apart, extending the crust into a valley
2.Normal fault thus creating a space.

 also known as thrust fault, sliding one

3. Reverse fault block of crust on top of another.
3 TYPES OF FAULTS
1.Strike-slip fault

2.Normal fault

3. Reverse fault
1.Strike-slip fault

Fault of
California
2.Normal fault
•Example of a normal fault in
sandstone in Utah, USA.

• Note how the hanging wall

has moved with respect to the
foot wall. Image has been
altered to show fault
movement
2.Normal fault

The Basin and Range

Province in North America
and the East African Rift
Zone are two notable districts
where normal fault is
spreading apart Earth's crust.
3. Reverse fault

WHAT CAUSES AN
EARTHQUAKE?
Facts!
• An earthquake is brought by an abrupt slip on a fault, much like
happens when you snap your fingers.
