This document describes the development of a manually operated hydraulic pipe bending machine. It discusses the need for such a machine in small fabrication workshops due to the high cost of existing pipe bending equipment. The objectives are to create an affordable portable machine that can bend different sized pipes with less effort using hydraulics. It then outlines the machine's working principle and methodology which includes modeling, fabricating components like the chassis and bending die, incorporating the hydraulic system, and testing the final assembled machine.

MANUALLY OPERATED HYDRAULIC
PIPE BENDING MACHINE
INTRODUCTION • Pipe bending operations are carried out frequently in industries since pipes are required to be bent into respective shapes • The major applications vary from small scale industries such as small fabrication workshops to large hydraulic manufacturer industries PROBLEM DEFINITION • The pipe bending machines are costly • No small scale machines available • As a result most of the pipe bending operations are outsourced • This results in increased cost of the product and lesser profits OBJECTIVES • To develop an economical portable pipe bending machine which can be used fo r bending the pipes in small workshops • To make the machine hydraulic operated so that it can easily bend different pipes with less effort • To make the machine economical and portable so that It can be easily afforded by small scale industries. CURRENT SYSTEMS • Large and costlier machines exist • The figure is of semiautomatic hydraulic pipe bending machine CURRENT SYSTEMS • Manual machine exist which do not used hydraulics, yet the cost of such machines is also approximately 60000 Rs • In addition effort required is more since it is not hydraulic WORKING PRINCIPLE WORKING PRINCIPLE • The project involves development of manually operated pipe bending machine using hydraulics. • As shown in the illustrations, the project consists of a pipe bending setup. The manually operated hydraulic hand pump is used to drive the hydraulic cylinder. • The hydraulic cylinder is attached to the fabricated frame and the other end of the hydraulic cylinder consists of a pipe bending die which will be fabricated as a part of this project. • The pipe bending die is made in two parts, the movable as well as stationary die. The pipe is fed into the die and hydraulic force is applied using the hydraulic hand pump to bend the pipe. METHODOLOGY • The literature review: This is the initial phase of the project and most important one. Before beginning with the project a number of research papers are studied to study a detailed literature of the currently existing systems. The study was further analyzed to find the advantages and disadvantages of the currently existing systems.
• The Market survey:
After the literature study the market survey will be done to find the most suitable materials for the project. The chosen materials should properly fit the application to be designed as well as economical so that it can be easily implemented by everyone.
• The chassis Modeling: In this phase the brief outline of the selected concept is done. The modeling is done using a 3D modeling software and then the chassis fabrication activity is undertaken. The chassis is of prime focus since chassis handles all the loads arising form the pipe bending operation. METHODOLOGY • The Fabrication: Once the modeling is ready, the next step would be development and fabrication activities. The fabrication processes involves cutting, Drilling , Grinding and welding operations. The chassis is fabricated and then the pipe bending mechanism is incorporated onto the chassis. • The hydraulic System incorporation : The hydraulic system is selected for the pipe bending operation. The selection of hydraulic system involves appropriate cylinder and oil pumping systems.. • The pipe bending Die: The pipe bending die is fabricated in this phase which is responsible for pipe bending operations. • Assembly and testing This is the final operation where the pipe bending machine components fabricated below are assembled to form a fully functional pipe bending machine. Components Used • The following components are used for the purpose of fabrication of Pipe Bending machine • Hydraulic Cylinder: The Hydraulic cylinder provides the necessary force required to bend the pipe. The hydraulic cylinder is mounted Horizontally and is a double acting cylinder. Components Used • The oil pumping systems. – The oil pumping system is used to pressurize the oil in hydraulic cylinder thereby making the movement of hydraulic cylinder to and fro. Components Used • The chassis . – The chassis forms the structural component on which all the other components are mounted. – The chassis forms a medium for transferring the entire load to ground. – The chassis is fabricated using ERW steel Operations required • The following operations are required for the fabrication of pipe bending machine. – Cutting – Welding – Turning – Gas cutting etc. ADVANTAGES • 1. Can be used in small scale and medium scale industries for the purpose of pipe bending operations. • 2. Since this machine is manually operated, it doesn’t require any power source to operate • 3. It works on hydraulics, Hence can be operated with minimum efforts • 4. Economical.
