Introduction
• Materials used in early human history included metals, glasses, and clay-based ceramics.
The past century has witnessed a surge in the development of new materials, including
plastics, advanced ceramics, liquid crystals, and nanoscale substances, with a wide range
of applications. Furthermore, materials science has grown to include testing these more
exotic forms of condensed matter and developing new physics theories to explain their
behavior.
• The two methods that we use for hardness test are Tensile test and Torsion test. Tensile
testing is a destructive test that provides information about the tensile strength, yield
strength, and ductility of the metallic material. It measures the force required to break a
composite or plastic specimen and the extent to which the specimen stretches or elongates
to that breaking point. Torsion testing involves the twisting of a sample along an axis and
is a useful test for acquiring information like torsional shear stress, maximum torque, shear
modulus, and breaking angle of a material.
• Moreover, we perform experiment to better understand how a material will behave in
certain conditions, or under certain stressors. Also the results of the test can help engineers
decide how and when to use a material when they are designing a project.

Testing Objective

Tensile test
• To understand about definition of stress, strain and theory.
• To know about process of tensile test and application’
• To indicate the mechanical properties including young modulus, yield stress,
ultimate stress, fracture stress
• Discussion about result of testing.

Torsion test
• Learn the basics of torsion theory and test some specimens, that we can learn
more about this subject.
• Find the maximum shear stress, shear strain and angle of twist of materials
• we can know some tools for application in this experiment

Methodology

1. Prepare specimens

• The specimen is conducted the experiment is known as dogbone

or dumbbell.
• There are type of specimens such as Aluminum, Iron and
polymers.

Methodology

2. Install the specimens

• Position the lower and upper clamps in their proper position to

accommodate the length of the test sample and place the material
between them.
• First, clamp the test piece in the upper clamp, then move the lower
clamp to the proper clamping position, and finally clamp the lower
end of the test piece.

TP SDM-I3 GIM
Methodology

• Reset the previous setup to default

• Choose the correct test standard, ISO and input the parameter
and data of specimens into the software.

Methodology

3. Testing Setup

• Start the tensile stress test.

• During the test, the specimen will slowly elongate which take
around 5 to 10 minutes.

Methodology

After the testing

• Unlatch the specimen piece from the tensile clamps. The tester
should check the test record to ensure the results obtained are
correct and accurate.
• Make sure the condition of the specimens are good.

Conclusion

• We performed tensile tests on aluminum specimens inside Tensile

Testing Machine equipped with the Trapezium software.. Aluminum has
a high ductility rate compared to ductile iron. which is a factor that
determines the deflection in structural components. This experiment
therefore provides a close relationship between the tensile strength and
the theoretical data.
• The shear modulus of aluminum and steel could be calculated
successfully by using the equations properly and Microsoft Excel.
Torsion and its applications are widely used in biomedical and
automotive structural applications.
