• Clauses are groups of words that have a subject and a verb. E.g.

The fox is smiling.
TY P ES OF CL A U S ES
AMONG CLAUSES WE FIND TWO TYPES:
INDEPENDENT AND DEPENDENT CLUSES.
• Known also as main clauses they are complete sentences
because they contain the main subject and verb of a
INDEPENDENT sentence.

CLAUSES
Where does Sue live?
• Dependent clauses are not complete sentences so they
DEPENDENT don’t make sense by their own.

CLAUSES
where Sue lives.
Although they are not complete sentences
they can have different functions. Thet can
work as nouns, adjectives or adverbs.

CLAUSES
• Adjective clauses as we know are dependent clauses that
work as adjectives, describing or modifying a noun.
ADJECTVE
CLAUSES I thanked the woman who helped me
• We saw a few classes ago SUBJECT adjective clauses
where they replaced the subject of one sentence. E.g.

OBJECT
I wrote a poem. The poem was sad.
ADJECTIVE I wrote a poem that was sad.
CLAUSES
In this clause the subject of the second sentence is “the
poem” and it is replaced for “that”
• Well, in OBJECT adjective clauses,we replace the object of one sentence
with a relative pronoun (who, that, which or whom). E.g.

The movie wasn’t very good. We saw it last night.


SO THEN? The movie that we saw wasn’t very good.

In this clause the oibject of the second sentence is “it” and it is replaced for
“that”
