Conversion of Units

1. The document discusses how to convert between different units of measurement for length, capacity, mass, time, and temperature. 2. It provides rules for converting between larger and smaller units by multiplying or dividing by powers of ten and moving the decimal place. 3. Examples are given to demonstrate how to convert between units like hm to dm, mm to m, hL to dL, days to hours, minutes to seconds, Celsius to Fahrenheit, and Fahrenheit to Celsius.

CONVERSION OF UNITS

In this lesson, you will be able to convert measurements

from one unit to another.
LENGTHS
Rules:
1. To change from a larger unit to a smaller unit(moving to the
right), multiply by a power of ten.
2. To change from a smaller unit to a larger unit (moving to the
left), divide by a power of ten.
Example 1:
1. Convert 35 hm to dm
To convert from hm to dm, we start at hm and move three steps to the
right to obtain dm.

hm da m dm
*10
Hence, we move the decimal point three places to the right.

35 hm = 35 000 dm

This is the same as multiplying 35 by 103 or 1000. Thus, 35 hm converts

to 35000 dm.
Example 2:

2. Convert 671 mm to m.
To convert from mm to m, we start at mm and move three steps to the left to obtain m.

÷10
Hence, we move the decimal point three places to the left.

671 mm = 0.671 m
CAPACITY
Rules:
1. To change from a larger unit to a smaller unit(moving to the right),
multiply by a power of ten.
2. To change from a smaller unit to a larger unit (moving to the left), divide
by a power of ten.
Example 1:

1. Convert 0.18 hL to dL
To convert from hL to dL, we start at hm and move three steps to
the right to obtain dL.

hL daL L dL
*10
Hence, we move the decimal point three places to the right.

0.18 hL = 0180 dL

This is the same as multiplying 0.18 by 1000. Thus, 0.18 hL

converts to 180 dL.
Example 2:

2. Convert 43.5 L to kL.

To convert from L to kL, we start at L and move three steps to the left to obtain kL.

÷10

Hence, we move the decimal point three places to the left.

43.5 L = 0.0435 kL
MASS
Rules:
1. To change from a larger unit to a smaller unit(moving to the right),
multiply by a power of ten.
2. To change from a smaller unit to a larger unit (moving to the left), divide
by a power of ten.
Example 1:

1. Convert 0.7 g to mg.

To convert from g to mg, we start at g and move three steps to the
right to obtain mg.

g dg cg mg
*10
Hence, we move the decimal point three places to the right.

0.7 g = 700 mg

This is the same as multiplying 0.7 by 1000. Thus, 0.7 g is equal to

700 mg.
Example 2:

2. Convert 452 dg to hg.

Move the decimal point 3 places to the left.

452 dg = 0. 452 hg

Thus, 452 dg is equal to 0.452 hg

TIME CONVERSION
1 day = 24 hours (hrs)
1 hour = 60 minutes (min)
1 minute = 60 seconds (sec)

Example 1:
9 days = ______hours
24 hours = 1 day

9 days = = 216 hours

Thus,
9 days = 216 hours.
Example 2:

26 min = _______ sec

1 min = 60 sec

26 min = = 1560 sec

Thus, 26 minutes is equal to 1560 seconds.

TEMPERATURE
Formula:
1. Fahrenheit to Celsius
C = ( F -32)

2. Celsius to Fahrenheit
F = C + 32
Example 1:
1. 50 C to F
F = C + 32

= ( 50) + 32

= 90 + 32
= 122
Thus, 50 degree Celsius is equal to 122 degree
Fahrenheit.
Example 2:

2. 104 F to C
C = ( F -32)

= ( 104 -32)

= ( 72)
= 40
Thus, 104 degree Fahrenheit is equal to 40
degree Celsius.
