Strip Plot Design

This is also two factors experiment. Both the factors require larger area.

If two factors are involved, & both the factors require larger plot sizes it is
difficult to carry out the experiment in split plot design.

Strip plot design is suitable for such experiments.

In strip plot design each block or replication is divided in to number of vertical

strips & horizontal strips depending on the levels of the respective factors.

A – 3 (a1 a2 a3) & B – 3 (b1 b2 b3)

Rep- I

a2b3 a1b3 a3b3 b3

b2 ↓
a2b2 a1b2 a3b2 Vertical
a2b1 a1b1 a3b1 b1
a2 a1 a3

→ Horizontal

→ Divide the replication (or) block in to Vertical strips. The number of

vertical strips will depend on number of levels of that factor which is to be
allotted vertically. Then allot the treatments randomly.

→ Divide the replication into horizontal strips. The number of levels of

horizontal strips will depend on number of levels of that factor which is to be
allotted horizontally. Then allot the treatments randomly using random
number table.
The same procedure is repeated for other replications. There are 3 different
plot sizes.

1.Vertical strips plot size

2.Horizontal strip plot size
3.Interaction plot size

The vertical strip & the horizontal strip are always perpendicular to each other.
Among the three plot sizes the interaction block size is the smallest.
Hence interaction is tested with more precision in strip plot design.
