HISTORY
OF THE
PERIODIC
TABLE
OBJECTIVES
• Discuss the history of the periodic table.
• Create a timeline of the key scientists who
contributed to the development of the periodic
table.
• Recognized the significance of scientist’s
contribution for the development of the periodic
table of elements

ANTOINE LAVOISIER
• Father of Chemistry
• Elements is a substance that cannot be
broken down by existing chemical means.
JOHN DOBEREINER
(1829)

• Developed the Law

of Triads.
LAW OF TRIADS
LAW OF
TRIADS

Each triad was composed of set of

three elements that have similar
properties.
JOHN
NEWLANDS
(1863)
• Proposed the Law
of Octaves.
LAW OF OCTAVES
LAW OF
OCTAVES
• Arrangement of elements in order of
increasing atomic mass.
• Every eighth element had similar
properties called octaves.
DMITRI
MENDELEEV
• Russian (1869)
chemist who arranged
the elements in order of
increasing atomic mass.
• He also put elements in
groups with those with similar
properties.
DMITRI MENDELEEV
(1869)
DMITRI MENDELEEV
(1869)
• The elements were arranged in rows and columns
and Dmitri left blank spaces for elements to be
discovered.
LOTHAR
MEYER (1864)
• He came up with the same
conclusion as Dmitri Mendeleev.
• Grouped the elements with similar
properties.
• Also left blank spaces for
undiscovered elements.
WILLIAM
RAMSAY (1894)
• a British chemist who discovered
four noble gases and showed that
those gases (together with Helium
and Radon) formed a new family
of elements named Noble Gases.
HENRY
MOSELEY
• was a British (1913)
physicist who used X-ray
frequencies to order the elements and
discovered that each element has a
unique emission pattern when X-rayed.
• He demonstrated that properties of an
element are determined by the atomic
number.

GREAT SCIENTISTS, I WAS
BORN!
GROUP ACTIVITY:
DIRECTIO
N:
The teacher will ask the leader to pick one scientist in the box.
After that, make a short skit about the scientist. The skit should
include the scientist’s name and contribution to the periodic
table of elements. Students are given 10 mins to prepare.
Presentation should only last 2-3minutes.
Guide Question:
