    School Health & Nutrition (SHN) guideline

    These guidelines are designed to help:
    • all implementers understand & use the SHN
    strategies.
    • establish, guide and implement SHN activities.
    The vision of the SHN programme
    • It is to promote and provide high quality, cost-
    effective health and nutrition services to all
    learners in order to improve learning
    The main objective of the SHN programme
    is:
    • Is to contribute to improved enrollment and
    retention and learning outcomes by enhancing
    the health and nutrition of learners.
    The SHN Objectives
    • Improve learners’ access to health services;

    • Promote and improve nutrition status of learners

    • Promote and maintain the health status of learners

    • Improve collaboration among line Ministries in


    planning and implementation of SHN interventions;

    • Strengthening school & community-based health &


    nutrition activities;

    • Provide health and nutrition education and promotion


    activities at all levels of the education system;

    • Promote and sustain a safe and healthy learning


    environment; and
    Three Pillars of
    SHN
    The School Health Services:
    • Monitoring of Learners’ health.
    • Referral & follow ups of sick learner.
    • Health talks etc.

    The Nutrition Services


    • Feeding program
    • Home grown meals
    • Gardening

    The Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
