Coterminal Angles

The document discusses coterminal angles and reference angles. Coterminal angles have the same initial and terminal sides and can be found by adding or subtracting multiples of 360 degrees from a given angle. The reference angle of an angle is the positive acute angle formed between the terminal side of the angle and the x-axis.

Coterminal Angles

Angles that have the same initial and

terminal sides are coterminal.

Example of Finding Coterminal Angles

You can find an angle that is coterminal to a given angle  by adding or

subtracting multiples of 360º.
Example: Find one positive and one negative angle that are coterminal to
112º.

For a positive coterminal angle, add 360º : 112º + 360º = 472º

For a negative coterminal angle, subtract 360º: 112º - 360º = -248º
Find one positive angle and one negative angle that are
coterminal with (a) −45° and (b) 195°.

a. -45 : if negative
Smallest Positive: -45 + 360 = 315°
Negative: -45 + (-360) = -405°
b. 195° : if positive
Negative: 195 + (-360) = -165°
Smallest Positive: 195+ 360= 555°
1. Find one positive and one negative angle that is
coterminal with the angle  = 530° in standard position.

530° if more than 360°

Smallest Positive: 520 – 360 = 170°
Negative: 170 + (-360) = -190°
1. Find one positive and one negative angle that is
coterminal with the angle  = 1010° in standard position.

1010° : if more than 360°

Smallest Positive: 1010 – 720 = 290°
Negative: 290 + (-360) = -70°
1. Find one positive and one negative angle that is
coterminal with the angle  = -503° in standard position.

Negative: -503 + 360= -143°

Smallest Positive: -143 +360 = 217°

Reference Angles
● A reference angle for an angle θ is the positive acute angle made by the
terminal side of angle θ and the x-axis.
Caution
A common error is to find the reference
angle by using the terminal side of θ
and the y-axis.

The reference angle is always found

with reference to the x-axis.
Example 1(a) FINDING REFERENCE ANGLES

● Find the reference angle for an angle of 218°.

The positive acute angle made

by the terminal side of this
angle and the x-axis is
218° – 180° = 38°.

For θ = 218°, the reference angle θ′ = 38°.

Example 1(b) FINDING REFERENCE ANGLES

● Find the reference angle for an angle of 1387°.

First find a coterminal angle

between 0° and 360°.
Divide 1387º by 360 to get a
quotient of about 3.9. Begin by
subtracting 360° three times.
1387° – 3(360°) = 307°.

The reference angle for 307° (and thus for 1387°) is

360° – 307° = 53°.
Reference angle of -145°

- solve first for its smallest positive coterminal

smallest positive coterminal

215°

-145° To get the reference angle of -145:

The smallest positive coterminal (215°) lies in
quadrant 3, so the reference angle is 215° -
180° = 35° (reference angle of -145°)
Reference angle of - 400°

- solve first for its smallest positive coterminal

smallest positive coterminal

320°

-400°
To get the reference angle of -400°:
The smallest positive coterminal (340°) lies in
quadrant 4, so the reference angle is 360° -
320° = 40° (reference angle of -400°)
