Magnet Y
Quarter 1 Week 7 – Day 1 1
Objective:
Describe techniques in separating
mixtures such as decantation,
evaporation, filtering, sieving and
using magnet.
What separation technique is used in the
illustration below?
1. 3.
2. 4.
1. What if you accidentally dropped a
pin in a bowl of flour, what will you
do to get it?
Materials:
1 pc iron filings
1pc pencil
1 pc magnet
1pc paper
1 pc comb
1 pc paper clip
1 pc Plant twig
1 pc coin
Procedure:
1. Gather the needed materials.
2. List all the materials to be tested in the Table 1.
3. Predict first if the materials you have is either magnetic by
putting (√) or
Non-magnetic (x) based on its physical appearance. Write your
prediction
in Table 1.
4. Now, try to check if the materials are magnetic or not by
testing if they can
be attracted to a permanent magnet then put √ or x.
5. Upon completion of the tests, discuss the results.

Presentation of output
Give 3 examples of mixture
that can be separated using a
magnet.
What activity in
our community where
magnetic separation is
applicable?
Complete the statements below by choosing
the correct answers from the given choices in
the box.
5. Mrs. Cruz's needle was mixed with bits of paper. How will she
separate the needle safely from the bits of paper?
a. by decantation
b. by winnowing
c. by using a magnet
d. by evaporation

Quarter 1 Week 7 – Day 2 1
Review:
1. How can we separate
mixtures using a magnet?
Now that you already know
how mixtures can be separated
using a magnet. Let’s have an
enrichment of our lesson.
Look around you, which
objects do you think are
attracted to a magnet?
• Components of mixtures can be separated in
many ways. The method that is being used
usually depends on the type of mixture.
Metal and non- metal objects can be
separated by using a magnet.
• There is no chemical reaction involved in
the separation of components.
• Metals which are made up alloy, nickel, or
cobalt are easily attracted to the magnet,
while non-metals are not. Iron fillings,
thumb tacks, staple wire, pins, coins, and
needle are some common examples of
objects that are attracted to the magnet.
• When they mixed with non-metals, these
could be separated by magnet.
Choose from the word box the
mixtures that can be separated by
magnet.
What activity in our community
where magnetic separation is
applicable?
Complete the statement
Questions:
1. Do you think Andrea Rose will be successful in her plan?
2. How would you describe the process of separating mixture through
magnet?
3. An object that has the ability to attract the other substance is called
4. In the given situation, what is considered as the magnetic object?
5. Since rice does not repel with the magnet, what kind of substance is it?
Additional activity
List down five (5) materials
found in your home that can be
attracted to magnets.

Quarter 1 Week 7 – Day 3 1
Review:
Put a check (/)if the mixtures can
be separated by a magnet and
(X) if not.
1. oil and water
2. flour and pins
3. staple wire and tissue paper
4. thumb tacks and bits of paper
5. talc powder and bond paper
Now that you already know the
five different ways to separate
mixtures. Let’s have an
enrichment of our lesson.
Identify the method by which the given mixtures will be
separated. Choose the letter of the correct answer inside the
box.

2. It is a method that will
cause the liquid in a mixture
to evaporate leaving the other
component/ substance behind.
5. A tool to separate the
pebbles and water.
Identify common separation techniques used to
separate the components of the following mixtures.
1. Sieving -
B. Sand and water 3. Filtration -
4. Evaporation -
5. Decantation -

Quarter 1 Week 7 – Day 4 1
Give an example of mixture that
can be separated by the following
methods:
1. decantation
2. evaporation
3. filtration
4. sieving
5. use of magnet
Let’s continue our
enrichment activities
about separating mixtures
The class will be divided into 5 groups.
Each group need to draw activities they observed in the
community where techniques in separating mixtures are
observed.
Group 1 – decantation
Group 2 – Evaporation
Group 3 – Filtration
Group 4 – Sieving
Group 5 – Using magnet
Presentation of Output
