Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

them.

The Great Hanging Gardens of Babylon

A palace with legendary gardens built on the banks of the Euphrates river by
King Nebuchadnezzar II

Fruits and flowers... Waterfalls... Gardens hanging from the palace terraces...
Exotic animals... This is the picture in most people's minds.

It may be surprising to know that they might have never existed except in the
minds of Greek poets and historians!
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia

An enormous statue of the Greek father of gods, carved by the great sculptor
Phidias.

It was created for the Olympics and it survived until it was destroyed by a
severe fire in AD 462.
The Temple of Artemis At Epheses

Considered the most beautiful structure on earth, it was built in honor of the Greek
goddess of hunting, wild nature and fertility.

On the night of 21 July 356 BC, a man named Herostratus burned the temple to
ground in an attempt to immortalize his name. Oddly enough, Alexander the Great
was born the same night.
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

Built in 350 BC, this was a fascinating tomb constructed for King Maussollos, Persian
satrap of Caria. It was named as one of the Seven Wonders because of it’s beauty and
wealth of statues and artifacts.

It was disassembled by the Knights of St. John in the 15th century to build another
massive castle that stands today.
The Colossus of Rhodes

A colossus of Helios the sun-god, erected by the Greeks near the

harbor of a Mediterranean Island.

It was a symbol of unity of the people.

From its building to its destruction lies a time span of merely 56 years.

Yet the colossus earned a place in the famous list of Wonders. "But even lying on
the ground, it is a marvel", said Pliny the Elder
The Lighthouse of Alexandria

A lighthouse built by the Ptolemes on the island of Pharos off the coast of their
capital city

Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, only one had a practical use in
addition to its architectural elegance

For sailors it insured safe entry into the harbor at night and was the tallest
building on earth at the time.

It had a mysterious mirror that reflected 50 miles out from shore.

New Wonders

Human imagination urged poets, writers, and historians to seek

"replacements" for the fallen monuments, a list of “Modern Wonders”.

Others argued that Ancient civilizations which the Greeks did not know of,
erected monuments that should have been included in the original list, such as
the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal in Agra, and the Temple of Angkor in
Cambodia are a few examples.

Like the ancient list, the new ones include fascinating monuments and
structures that changed the existing landscape. However, no single list won
unanimous approval among historians, artists, and architects.
