Julia Álvarez

Álvarez was born on March 27, 1950

Biography in Julia New York City and is the


daughter of Dominican parents, who
returned to her native country
shortly after her birth, although ten
years later, her family was forced to
flee the country due to their
ideology. anti- Trujillo. She is a
Dominican-American novelist, poet,
and essayist.

Álvarez has written novels, of which the
following stand out: How the García Girls Lost
Their Accents, In the Time of the Butterflies, Yo!,
In the Name of Salomé, Saving the World and
Beyond. John Jay College, The City University
of New York, awarded her an Honorary
Doctorate in Human Sciences in 1996, and in
September 2000 she was declared Woman of the
Year by Latina Magazine.

STUDIES
She began her university studies at Connecticut College and
concluded them at Middlebury College where she graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts degree (1971). She has a master's degree in Creative
Writing from Syracuse University (1975).

She has taught English and literature at California State College


(1977)), Phillips Andover Academy (1979-1981), University of Vermont
(1981-1983), and at the University of Illinois (1985-1988).

She was writer-in-residence at Mary Williams Elementary School (1978)


and George Washington University (1984-1985). Part of her poetic and
narrative production appears in numerous magazines in the United
States, Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean.

Her novels have been praised by the most
important media outlets in the United
States and Latin America, including The
New York Times. Her first novel, How the
Garcia Girls Lost their Accent, was named
Book of the Year in 1991 by the New York
Times Book Review and Library Journal.

In 1994, In The Time of the Butterflies, her


second novel, was nominated best book
of the year by the National Book Critics
and chosen best book of 1994 by the
American Library Association. She writes
in English and resides in Vermont, where
she has served as an English professor at
Middlebury College since 1988.

On July 28, 2014, President Barack Obama awarded
the National Medal of Arts to the poet, novelist and
essayist of Dominican origin, Julia Álvarez. The
writer was awarded at the White House for her
contributions to the arts and humanities.

"In poetry and prose, (...) Álvarez explores themes


of identity, family, and cultural differences. She
illustrates the complexity in navigating two worlds
and reveals the human capacity for resistance in
the face of oppression," Obama said at the
ceremony.
Julia Alvarez is a leading figure
in contemporary literature. Her
work continues to be read and
studied around the world, and
her legacy lives on in promoting
cultural diversity and social
justice.
