Michelangelo died in Rome at the age of 89 on 18 February
in 1564. He was first buried in the SS. Apostoli church after
a very modest and small funeral organised by the compagnia

Madonna on the
stairs
Michelangelo's first sculpture (1490-1491)
was the Madonna on the stairs, a low
relief homage to Donatello's relievo
stiacciato (smashed relief) technique.
The Madonna sits on a square stone
block, the Christ child on her lap, her
back to the viewer. On the left is the
flight of stairs that gives the piece its
name.
How did michelangelo become an
artist?
The son of a government administrator, he grew up in Florence,
a center of the early Renaissance movement, and became an
artist's apprentice at age 13. Demonstrating obvious talent, he
was taken under the wing of Lorenzo de' Medici, the ruler of
the Florentine republic and a great patron of the arts.

The Madonna della Pietà informally known as La Pietà, is a

marble sculpture of Jesus and Mary at Mount Golgotha
representing the Sixth Sorrow" of the Blessed Virgin Mary by
Michelangelo Buonarroti, now in Saint Peter's Basilica
Vatican City.
Leonardo di ser piero da

Who is leonardo da
vinci?
Born on April 15, 1452 and died on May 2, 1519.
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian
polymath of the High Renaissance who was
active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer,
scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. He was
popularized in present times through the novel
and movie, “Da Vinci Code.” He is known as
the ultimate “Renaissance man” because of his
intellect, interest, talent and his expression of
human and classical values.
What was leonardo da vinci known
for?
Although he is best known for his dramatic
and expressive artwork, Leonardo also
conducted dozens of carefully thought
out experiments and created futuristic
inventions that were groundbreaking for
the time. His keen eye and quick mind
led him to make important scientific
discoveries, yet he never published his
ideas.
One of da Vinci’s most famous
inventions, the flying machine
(also known as the "ornithopter")
ideally displays his powers of
observation and imagination, as
well as his enthusiasm for the
potential of flight. The design for
this invention is clearly inspired
by the flight of winged animals,
which da Vinci hoped to
replicate. In fact, in his notes, he
mentions bats, kites and birds as
sources of inspiration.
