Electricity & Magnetism Homework
1. Fill in the blanks on the following sentences:
(3)

• Positive charges repel positive charges

• Negative charges repel negative charges
• Positive charges attract negative charges

2. Write a definition for the following terms:

(3)

a) Current: An electric current is a flow of charge, it is the flow of

electrons carrying a negative charge.
b) Potential difference: Potential difference tells us the change of
energy in a circuit.
c) Resistance: This factor affects how easy or hard it is for current
to flow around a circuit.

3. Look at the following circuits, complete the blanks to identify

each of the ammeter readings.
(4)
4. Complete the following calculation:
(4)
a) 6V / 2A = 3Ω
b) 10V / 5Ω = 2A
c) 0.5A x 8Ω = 4V
d) 9V / 3A = 3Ω

6. Describe how you would use a nail, piece of wire, crocodile clips
and a battery to make an electromagnet, and explain three ways
in which you could increase its strength.
(6)

Attach crocodile clips to the ends of a piece of wire, wrap the piece
of wire around an iron nail and attach the crocodile clips to either
end of a battery – this makes an electromagnet. To increase the
strength of an electromagnet: increase the number of loops of wire
around the iron core; increase the current flowing through the wire;
use a magnetic material as the core will increase the strength of the

work and award RED/AMBER/GREEN based on the following
percentage boundaries:

If they have achieved above 70%, I will award them a

GREEN. If they have achieved between 40 - 70% I will
award them an AMBER. If they achieve below 40%, I
will award them a RED.
