• A long robe with wide sleeves
• It is unlined in summer, lined in
autumn and spring and padded
in winter

varying in length from mid-

• Hanten :- short winter coat. It has a thick layer of padded cotton to warm the
body. The collar of hanten is usually made from black sateen.

Fundoshi :- loincloth
• historically worn as shorts by labourers and
rickshaw drivers.
• In modern times, fundoshi are often worn to
festivals involving feasts of strength and
endurance.

Geta :- shoes
• clogs and flip-flops at the same time.
• Made of wood with thongs made of cloth
(leather, rubber etc.) that pass between the
big toe and second toe.
• Tabi socks are often worn with geta.

• Jika-tabi or tabi :- They are outdoor shoes,
which have rubber soles and metal tabs as
fasteners.
• Tabi boots are used by workers.

Uwabaki :- They are slippers for
indoor usage, worn at home or in
buildings where street shoes are
prohibited. Uwabaki are flexible and
easy to take on/off.

Waraji :- sandals made of straw rope
(rice straw, hemp, cotton threads, palm
fibers etc.).
Used by farmers, soldiers and monks,
but they are worn even by ordinary
people in Japanese towns.

zori:- flip-flops made of rice straw,
hemp, cotton threads, palm fibers,
leather, rubber or other material.

Kimono :- Kimono was once worn on
a daily basis by most Japanese people.
In modern times, it's formal
wear that's appropriate for a wide
range of occasions.

over garment:- Mofuku kimono :- used for funerals. It
is black, without any patterns. There is
also a nagajuban, white, red or pink
undergarment which is worn under all
kinds of kimono

white kimono used by brides for a
wedding.

Furisode :- A kimono with extremely long
sleeves in the forearm arm only worn
by adult single woman. Most commonly

weddings and tea ceremonies.

• Yukata :- light kimono for summer
occasions.
• Informal kind of kimono, worn in
summer or after bathing.
• Usually made of cotton.

Hiyoku :- Hiyoku is a kimono robe that's
worn under the outer kimono robe.
Historically, kimono were worn in up to 20
layers for formal occasions and up to 5
layers for warmth.
Layering kimono once involved much
symbolism but this is mostly a lost art.

Happi :- A robe-like cotton vest used
as a uniform for teams at festivals that
usually comes with a matching
headband.
