What does Fashion STYLING means?

Fashion Styling is the art of styling clothes to

create certain looks and appropriate for the
occasion but pleasing at the same time.
FASHION vs STYLING

• Fashion is impersonal, while style is personal.
• Fashion is dated, while style is versatile.
• Fashion seeks convenience, while style seeks quality.
• Fashion is fast, while style is learned.
• Fashion is difficult to attain, while style is attainable.
• Fashion is exclusionary, while style is inviting.

STYLING TALK
Why is it important to style our outfit based
on our BODY SHAPE?
• Your body shape determines what you should wear. Just because it looks
good on the mannequin doesn't mean it'll look good on you.
• Use clothing to emphasize the best aspects of your build and divert
attention away from your undesirable features.
• Be aware: even if you have the body of a supermodel, the wrong clothes
could make you look out of proportion.
• Don’t expect your clothes to fit you off the rack – you’ll probably need
to have them altered. Get a good local tailor and get to know them on a
first name basis. You should trust your tailor like your best friend.
• Dress for the body you have now and not the body you want in the
future.

What
MEN - TRIANGLE To
Wear

• Jackets with shoulder padding and a narrow athletic cut will emphasize your shoulders

• Correct fit at the shoulders is priority #1

• Single breasted jackets will have a slimming effect on your lower body, as will vertical patterns. A mixture
of patterns and solid colors will create the illusion of shape (as opposed to softness) and draw attention
away from your waistline.

• Light-colored shirts and jackets can add width to your shoulder area.

• When you buy a shirt, look for a standard straight point collar with a medium spread.

• The types of jeans and pants cut with a slight flare will help balance out your larger thighs. And remember,
the old saw is true: black, or any dark color, is slimming.
What
MEN – INVERTED TRIANGLE To
Wear

• close-fitting clothes that reduce visual clutter and emphasize the clean, sharp lines of your
torso
• slim-fit shirts to show off your torso but remember to size up. You want to hint subtly at your
fitness, not scream it by wearing figure-hugging clothes like ‘extra skinny fit’.
• slim-fit jackets that follow the natural line of your silhouette and are tapered at the waist.
• unstructured jackets – the silhouette works better in streamlining your frame.
• straight-leg trousers and jeans. Wearing patterned pants, camo shorts or checked trousers is a
good idea because it distracts from your comparatively broad upper body.
• Wearing a good quality men's leather belt will help you to emphasize the waist and hips,
giving a sense of balance to your look.
• Trousers with cuffs and pleats give the impression of bulkier legs, thus balancing out your top
half.
• Consider lighter colored trousers which will make your hips look wider.
What
MEN – OVAL To
Wear
• Vertical stripes and pinstripes will lengthen the body. These give an elongated appearance to the
specific area worn.
• Trousers and shirts or sweaters which are the same color will create a slimming effect. Avoid
contrasting colors, which will draw attention to your larger stomach area. Opt for navy or charcoal;
darker colors are more slimming.
• A V-neck sweater or t-shirt with long sleeves will create a slimmer silhouette illusion. In dress shirts, a
wider collar spread works well for broad men because it balances out their wide proportions.
• Wear trousers with a comfortably loose waist (never belted so tight that it pinches and wrinkles).
Trousers that start just above your original waistline give the impression that you have slimmer, longer
legs.
• For casual wear, consider untucking your shirt (make sure you are wearing a casual shirt) so as not to
draw attention to your belt line.
• Consider suspenders in place of a belt (“braces” in the UK) – they hold the trouser front out slightly,
letting it fall in a smooth front all the way past the crotch.
What
MEN – TRAPEZOID To
Wear

• Vertical stripes will make you appear a little taller. Checks and plaids add horizontal
bulk, so pick which one you need based on your height.
• A blazer or suit jacket tapers your waist, making your stomach seem slimmer and your
shoulders seem broader. Wear it buttoned with a single button at the waist for maximum
effect.
• Wear dark colored trousers along with light colored shirts. This will make your legs look
proportionate to your upper body.
• Take care that your trousers meet with your ankle and shoes, This will show that both
your upper and lower body are of equal proportions.
• An average build just needs clean lines and a good personal style to look sharp. Details
such as pocket squares or boutonnieres will help separate you from the masses.
What
MEN – RECTANGLE To
Wear

• Horizontal stripes, especially across your upper torso, will add width to your slight frame.
Avoid Vertical stripes because they will make you look thinner.

• Use layering (for example, a cardigan over a dress shirt and underneath a sports jacket) to
add shape to the upper half of your body.

• Opt for wide collar shirts and wide lapels to create the illusion of broader shoulders, and
roll-neck sweaters to make your chest look wider.

• Jackets or blazers with shoulder pads will also help create the illusion of broader
shoulders.
What
MEN – RECTANGLE To
Wear

• A single-breasted jacket in a patterned fabric (combined with plain-colored trousers) will

make you look as if you have broader shoulders and a slimmer lower body.
• Find a suit jacket with as many pockets as possible, as this helps to draw the attention
away from the straightness of your figure and helps to create more horizontal lines on
your body.
• Pops of brighter colors up top or details like epaulets will expand the dimensions of your
slim frame. A neatly tied or draped scarf is an easy way to add a point of difference to
your look, as well as flesh out your upper torso.
• Dark-colored trousers or jeans will make your legs look slimmer, indirectly adding width
to your shoulders. Trouser cuffs are a good choice as they add substance and shape to
your lower half.

GUIDELINE FOR TUCKING IN A SHIRT

Consider the Occasion & Dress Code

Generally, the more formal the event, the more likely you will need to have your shirt
tucked in to meet the dress code.
•Casual: If you’re are wearing a short-sleeved shirt, polo or t-shirt to a casual
occasion, always leave it untucked.
•Smart Casual: If you are wearing a casual shirt by itself leave it untucked, however,
if you are wearing a shirt paired with a casual jacket or coat, tuck it in for smart
casual occasions.
•Business Casual: Whether you are sporting a blazer, sweater or just a shirt, always
have your shirt tucked in. The last thing you want to be is that guy in a meeting who
looks untidy in front of their work colleagues or clients.
•Business Formal, Cocktail, Black Tie and any other formal event: Since all these
occasions require a suit one way or another, you will absolutely need to tuck in your
shirt.
GUIDELINE FOR TUCKING IN A SHIRT

Types of Shirts to Tuck in

There are a few rules to go by when tucking in each type of shirt.
•T-shirts: Regardless how you wear your t-shirt, either with a casual jacket or by itself,
there is no need to tuck it in.
•Polo shirts: Although these can be tucked, we recommend leaving them untucked to
make your look more modern and casual when wearing it alone or with a jacket.
•Short sleeve casual shirts: Whether it be just a standard casual shirt or cheery
Hawaiian shirt, always have short-sleeved shirts untucked—unless being worn with a
blazer or jumper, then it should be tucked in.
•Long sleeve casual shirts: Depending on the formality of the occasion, you can either
tuck it or leave it untucked. For example, if you are heading to a pub, you will want to
leave it untucked, however if you are going for a special occasion, tuck it in.
•Business and dress shirts: Since you’ll be pairing this type of shirt with either a full
suit or chinos and a blazer, it’s best to always have these tucked in.

STYLING GUIDELINES - JEANS

• If you’re wearing jeans, cuff the hem twice. This shortens the
hemline and looks great with sandals, espadrilles or sneakers in a
casual situation. You can also do this when wearing ankle boots.
Cuffing this way will make your jeans meet at the top of your
ankle boot, without the messy tucking situation.
STYLING GUIDELINES - JACKETS

• Roll the sleeves to your elbow, it will look like a

relaxed gathered and intentional detail. If the
sleeves don’t stay when rolled up, simply cuff
the sleeves at the wrist, twice or three times is
enough. This transitions your jackets into
suitable tran-seasonal pieces to wear in the in-
between weather and shortens your sleeve
length temporarily. It looks trendy and
intentional too! A bonus here is you can return
the sleeve to its usual length when you want to
layer a long sleeve top underneath.
STYLING GUIDELINES – FORMAL SUITS
• Never ever button the bottom button of a suit jacket
• Never forget to unbutton the jacket when you sit down
• Always keep the top button of your shirt buttoned
• Don’t let the shirt cuffs go over your hands (Ideally, a
quarter of an inch of the cuff of your shirt sleeve should
appear from beneath the jacket sleeve. )
• Never look like you choke yourself
• Wear only a jacket that fits
• Tie length (hits the top of your belt)
• Never let your socks be seen
• Make sure your socks are long enough. No one wants to see
your hairy legs between trousers and socks when you sit
down.
GUIDELINE TO WEAR A FORMAL ATTIRE –
WOMAN

• Pants / skirts:
Women can wear casual pants or skirts. Neither should be tight.
Fabrics should be crisp; colors should generally be solid; navy,
black, gray, brown and khaki are always safe bets. For the most
business-like appearance, pants should be creased and tailored;
neither extreme of tight or flowing.
• Skirt length and slits:
Your skirt should come at least to your knees while you are
standing. While you are seated, your thighs should be covered. If
your skirt comes to just below the knee, a slit to just above the
knee might be acceptable. A very long skirt should not be slit to
above the knee.
Generally slits in the center back of a skirt — to facilitate walking
a stair climbing — are acceptable. Slits to facilitate a view of your
legs are not appropriate for business purposes.
