What is PLM – Product Lifecycle Management
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is managing product’s information
through out it’s lifecycle (from concept to maturity) by involving all stake
holders internal and external to the company, so that right information is
available to the right people at right time
PLM is the process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product from its
conception, through design and manufacture, to service and disposal
PLM integrates people, processes and technology and provides a product
information backbone for companies and their extended enterprise by
facilitating
the control of critical product information and product development processes
Collaborative product development through the sharing of product information,
concepts and ideas across enterprises and their extended supply chains.

Introducing Windchill
Windchill is a set of integral Product
Lifecycle Management (PLM)
solutions that
• accelerates time-to-market
• lowers development costs
• fosters innovation

by facilitating
• the control of critical product
information and product development
processes
• collaborative product development
through the sharing of product
information, concepts and ideas
across enterprises and their extended
supply chains.

Where PLM fits in an Enterprise
It is one of the four cornerstones of a
enterprise's information technology
structure. All companies need to manage
– Communications and information with
their customers (CRM-Customer
Relationship Management)
– Suppliers (SCM-Supply Chain
Management)
– Resources within the enterprise (ERP-
Enterprise Resource Planning)
– In addition to above three, they must
also develop, describe, manage and
communicate information globally
across there own companies, design
partners, suppliers and customers
(PLM – Product Lifecycle
Management).

Intersection of PLM & ERP / MRP Through The Product Lifecycle
Steady state
Principal focus of PLM solution

• High frequency/Collaborative Principal focus of ERP/MRP solution

• Change management of “discoveries”
• Use digital model as principal knowledge
• Larger operational footprint • High frequency/Transactional
• EBOM is derivative information • Change management of “knowns”
• Focus : Product performance • Use MBOM as principal knowledge
• Robust design • Smaller operational footprint
• Links manufacturing to procurement

Core Capabilities of PLM or Critical process that PLM address
Single Central Secured Repository
for access to entire enterprise with reference to their roles and functional responsibilities

Requirements Capture & Management Process

Translating the voices of customers into prioritized requirements, targets and constraints
while establishing bi-directional traceability between requirements, analysis
documentation, product designs, BOMs, and verification data

New Product Development Process

Managing the cross-functional business focused process of introducing new products to
market

Quality Management Process

Support rapid adoption, and ensure consistent and repeatable application, of quality
improvement methodologies like APQP, Six Sigma, CMMI etc

Detailed Design Process

fully defining product design that (includes documents, CAD, Simulation, BOM,
calculations, Specifications etc) meets requirements and is sufficiently documented for
manufacturing

Core Capabilities of PLM or Critical process that PLM address
Variant Design & Generation Process
Designing and managing multiple product configurations to satisfy customer, regional and market-
specific needs and accommodate design alternatives and improvements

Design Outsourcing Process

Engaging with a 3rd party to deliver a system, a sub-system or a component design often includes
delivery of the part itself

Engineering Change Management

Managing engineering changes to released parts for proto type and production

Supplier Management Process

Managing Supplier information with AML/AVL

Manufacturing Process Management

Process of defining and managing the manufacturing processes to be used to fabricate parts, to
assemble final products, and to perform inspection.

Technical Publications Process Management

Identifying, authoring, publishing and delivering information that describes the capabilities, use,
maintenance and support of a product

Core Capabilities of PLM or Critical process that PLM address
Enterprise Visualization
Viewing product information including 3D across downstream departments like
Procurement, Planning, Manufacturing etc

Integration with ERP systems

Transferring BOMs, Change notice and documents for further transaction purposes

Business Process Automation

Streamlining business process capturing product maturity history through lifecycle and
moving towards paperless office

Data Security
Securing the intellectual property of company by ensuirnf global collaborative product
development

Knowledge Management
Disciplined way of connecting people with information and the tools they need to manage
it. By helping people work together, knowledge management empowers the mind of many
and provides benefits to the organization

PLM Benefits

Improve product quality by consolidating islands of information for global access

of current, accurate product information from a variety of sources
Prevent costly design errors by gaining control over chaotic product change
management processes
Reduce the time to bring a new product to market through easy and consistent
reuse of previously designed product configurations
Foster innovation and reduce development cost by generating more ideas
through increased involvement of cross-functional participants inside or outside
your company
Reduce time-to-market by automating business process and reducing non-value
added activities
Reduce product cost and manufacturing rework by automating the release and
tracking of product information and change processes with manufacturing
